Bug Description

Hi,

There are many times when using firefox with around 4 tabs open that it will just turn gray and be unresponsive. In addition, when changing themes while firefox is open, firefox can turn gray, but still be responsive. I also noticed that trying to navigate to a new page (in the same tab) while a video is loading can lead to a freeze of firefox.

It appears that a number of other people are having similar issues: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=590242

Please let me know if you need any other info.

Cheers
Rax

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. This bug did not have a package associated with it, which is important for ensuring that it gets looked at by the proper developers. You can learn more about finding the right package at [WWW] https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. I have classified this bug as a bug in firefox.

I have been plagued with this bug as well. Firefox grayed out almost constantly when I opened new windows. At first I thought is was caused by Flash but disabling flash didn't solve it. After disabling all Firefox add-ons I noticed that Firefox worked without any flaws. I discovered that as long as I do NOT enable the Google bar add-on Firefox is stable again. The add-ons I have enabled are Flash, Webdeveloper, Addblock and Ubufox.
I am not sure if this is actually a bug in the Google add-on or that there is some other bug floating around that just happens to be 'activated' on my system when I have enabled the Google bar add-on but I can reproduce the problem any time I enable the Google bar add-on.

I have the same problem with FF 2.0.6, 2.0.9, 2.0.10 and Swiftox of the same revisions. The Firefox revisions were either installed or updated via synaptic. Swiftfox comes from their own repo which I enabled in synaptic. I do not have compiz or the google bar. The common denominator seems to be ubufox. It seems that everyone has it installed. I really thought that Flash might be the problem because yahoo.com will crash all of the above browsers instantly almost every time.

I am experiencing the same problem on Fiesty since the two automatic FF updates over the past week, with this added issue -- FF also becomes unresponsive when I hit the back button. Plain vanilla: no Google toolbar, no Compiz, nada. Before the updates FF was rock solid. I'm a noob using a Dell E1505n, i.e., factory installed Ubuntu.

I have the same problem, see this thread: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=590242.

The problem seems to be related to Compiz, which even runs on a vanilla install when no desktop effects are enabled. Pushing Alt+F2 and issuing the command "metacity --replace" makes the problems go away on my machine.

Johnnyc44's report cannot be a duplicate of 135110 because he reports "no Google toolbar". 135110 is all about GTB.

linux newbie.
i don't believe the freeze/gray issue happened initially (upon ubuntu install), more of a recent development.
killed google toolbar search (due to comments within this bug report).
still get a daily hit of the freeze/gray/non-responsive.
seems there are lots of log files in linux (etc.).
are there any log files that will help in isolating this issue?

run firefox form the terminal like:

 strace -f -eopen firefox &> /tmp/firefox.strace.log

after you reproduced, attach /tmp/firefox.strace.log to this bug.

ran the command line, as suggested in report immediately above.
left the browser open overnight so i would not forget to execute from the command line; my memory just doesn't function like it should, but i keep forgetting that.
bug occurred within the first few minutes this morning.
one tab open. gray screen, unresponsive for 10 to 15 ish seconds.
backspace key not involved.
do you want me to continue to run the trace log or is this just too much info?
holler if i can help.

without noscript everything is normal.

maybe a log without noscript would be helpful?

I was having the same problem, and after doing some poking around on my system, I found it to be the wine/crossover office installed plugins that were installed. after removing them, firefox ran fine again.

Hope that was insightful to others who are still experiencing the problem.
In your browser go to the URI about:plugins to see whats loaded.

The issue that you reported is one that should be reproducible with the live environment of the Desktop CD of the development release - Hardy Heron. It would help us greatly if you could test with it so we can work on getting it fixed in the actively developed release. You can find out more about the development release at [WWW] http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/

Sorry but Firefox-2 is getting near EOS and they wont be fixing anything but major issues security issues mainly. Please try to reproduce this with Firefox-3.0 if you can reproduce this bug please click on Help > Report a problem and file the bug that way. This does not mean that it wasn't already fixed.

the same thing happens in firefox 3.0b5 on ubuntu 8.04.
Firefox freezes and so does thunderbird. I turned off a whole bunch of plugins and the problem vanished.

I have flash plugin enabled and a vlc plugin enabled. And this is working fine.
I turned off
a) default plugin,
b) demo print plugin for unix/linux
c) divx web player
d) Helix dna player; realplayer G2
e) itunes application detector
f)quick time plugin
g) totem web browser plugin 2.22.1
h) windows media player plugin 10 (from totem 2.22.1)

I am not quite sure how I got that many plugins. Probably from a recent installation of codecs for totem player.

But this was happening even before this codec download.
