Bug Description

Binary package hint: base-passwd

I was upgrading a machine from Dapper through Edgy and Feisty to Gutsy. On upgrading to Gutsy (using the update-manager's Upgrade button), there was a question about base-passwd and the "nobody" user (I think it had changed UID). This should not be necessary, since these things had not been changed manually on the machine.

My base-passwd Subversion repository says that 'nobody' hasn't changed in any way since 2003, so I don't believe that you can have encountered this on Ubuntu without either changing it by hand or having a script do it for you (perhaps without your knowledge). Its UID most certainly has never changed and is unlikely to ever change in the future.

I'll see if I can find some logs (this was on a friend's computer).

I believe update-manager keeps a full terminal log in something like /var/log/update-manager/term.log, which should help. (In fact, it's probably easiest just to get me all of the update-manager logs.)

I'm afraid I can't do anything about this bug without logs. If you ever manage to recover them, please reopen this bug with them ...
