Bug Description

This bug is 100% reproducible and 100% annoying. In Kubuntu Gutsy, if you "Safely Remove" a USB pendisk, the device does get indeed unmounted. HOWEVER, the icon also disappears from the Desktop, making it impossible to mount it again without having to physically unplug and replug the device (or to use the console, which I do).

Thanks for reporting this bug.

The behaviour is by design, the bug should be marked as wishlist. I believe this way is more suited to most users as the terms "unmount" and "safely remove" seem to have been swapped for ease of use purposes. People don't really consider their device as "unmounting", they think the procedure is just what you to to make it safe enough to pull out.

Thanks for your reply. Though I'm really dumbstruck how behaviour that's confusing and wrong could be intentionally designed into a system under the guise of user-friendliness. Even more so because I just noticed that if instead of a USB pendisk you plug-in a larger USB drive, the behaviour is correct! How is this inconsistency supposed to be user-friendly?

Moreover, in the long term you're in for a world of hurt if you start conceding on wrong design choices due to a poor assessment of
usability. It makes systems more complex, error-prone, and yes -- far less user-friendly!

I still maintain this is a bug. And apparently one that is far more serious than I first imagined. From which package does it come from?

This is not a bug. This is how USB works.

This is not how USB works on Mandriva 2008.1. The icon stays on the desktop in Mandriva. I have also experienced this problem in Kubuntu Hardy. This is definately a bug.
