Bug Description

Binary package hint: xchat-gnome

There is no way to have the User list always shown on screen like most IRC clients do (Pidgin, mIRC, HydraIRC come to mind).

The logic place to show that would be directly below the channel list.

Err. This is the way you actually propose new features so this is still valid. Sorry again.

Oh, well. I guess I'll file a couple more bugs and try to switch to another application then.

Thanks for your time.

Reopening, because I have a patch and Sebastien Bacher said in the upstream report that he could use a patch for the option in Ubuntu.

xchat-gnome (1:0.18-2ubuntu2) hardy; urgency=low

  * debian/patches/10_user_list_in_main_window_option.patch:
    - Option to show the user list in the main window.

The previous debdiff was broken. Attaching a working one.

Repacked this for lucid, and fixed a problem in the patch that made the UI freeze after showing and hiding the context menu for the user list.

xchat-gnome (1:0.26.1-1ubuntu2) lucid; urgency=low

  * Added debian/patches/20_userlist_panel.patch:

Maia, thanks for your work on this. I have tested the PPA packages, and unfortunately there are some issues. Choosing Discussion->Users (ctrl-U) now brings up an empty window which does not go away.

It seems that not all of the upstream developers are against such an option, so I would encourage you to submit a new patch against their latest git tree.

Would it make sense to simply disable this command when the user list is shown in the main window? I'll modify the patch accordingly.

IMO, it is most intuitive if ctrl-U (or the menu entry) hides/shows (toggles) the user list, but that is a bit inconsistent with the way it works with the pop-up list, where ctrl-U displays it and the escape key dismisses it.

Maia Everett (linneris) wrote :

For now, here's an updated debdiff. It hides the menu entry and disables the Ctrl-U combination when the user list is set to be always visible.

thank you for your work there, could you update the change upstream to be rebased on the git version which use gtkbuilder rather than glade though? I'm unsubscribing the sponsors for now because we want to get the gtkbuilder version in lucid and the current change will not apply to that one

It will be nice to have the user list visible all the time as it makes it easy to highlight messages to particular user. I would like to test if you merge the patch upstream.

Maia Everett (linneris) wrote :

The patch for the git version is in the upstream bug report. Note, however, that only the preferences dialog has migrated to GtkBuilder so far, and even it retains the .glade extension. Other windows still use libglade.

Sorry about the status spam. This has been committed to the upstream repo but is not in an upstream release yet. And since we are past Feature Freeze for Lucid anyway, this will not be fixed in Lucid unless it gets special attention. AFAICS xchat-gnome is not covered by the Gnome FFe, but merged from Debian.

Can someone verify if the version in natty carries this fix? If not, then this should be re-added to sponsors queue to get packaged and included in natty.
