Update problem

Would you please answer the following

Could you detail the steps/commands you used to upgrade

all desktop icons missing, does that mean Applications, Places, System, Date, Switcher are all missing

could you attach a screen shot

thank you for your response. I tried to send you the screen shot you asked. During the process I tried to save the shot in my USB drive, which I couldn't trace. I could open my mail box through Firefox with the Help -> Report a Problem.
Steps I did take:
I started UBUNTU OS -> I was asked for Updates -> I accepted -> I was asked for root password -> I typed & entered -> The Updates were around 125 MB -> after the down load I got the message that some of the Updates could not be down loaded, others are installed sucessfully -> I switched off the machine.
Next day I found the problem after starting the machine.
all desktop icons missing, yes that mean Applications, Places, System,
Date, Switcher are all missing.
I am trying to capture the screen shot & attach with this mail. Before that I am sending this mail as a precautionary if I miss this screen again

Is the Screen totally Gold, with no While Panel bars at the top and bottom of the screen.

Yes the Screen is totally gold, and again I am to repeat other than Prt Scr
no key is functioning. Mouse also is not working.
