Bug Description

[Impact]

This is a bug in Ubuntu 18.04 LTS.

The application Regina (installed through the package regina-normal) will not start.

The problem seems to be that it is linked against the graphviz plugins, which moved location (thus the executable can no longer find the libraries that it links against). The fix is simply to rebuild regina-normal, with no changes needed to the source.

[Test Case]

- Install the package regina-normal;
- At a command line, type "regina-gui".

The application crashes with the message: "regina-gui: error while loading shared libraries: libgvplugin_core.so.6: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory"

[Where problems could occur]

It can't get much worse than how it is currently (not starting at all).

---

From original description:

Rebuilding regina-normal against the current Ubuntu 18.04 LTS causes the executable to be linked correctly, and the problem is fixed.

This problem does *not* affect Ubuntu 18.10. It is only present in Ubuntu 18.04 LTS.

I would be grateful if someone could please rebuild regina-normal on 18.04 and upload this to bionic-updates, and/or include the rebuild in the next point release (I presume 18.04.2).

Thanks - Ben.

Hello Ben, or anyone else affected,

Accepted regina-normal into bionic-proposed. The package will build now and be available at https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/regina-normal/5.1-2build2 in a few hours, and then in the -proposed repository.

Please help us by testing this new package. See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation on how to enable and use -proposed. Your feedback will aid us getting this update out to other Ubuntu users.

If this package fixes the bug for you, please add a comment to this bug, mentioning the version of the package you tested, what testing has been performed on the package and change the tag from verification-needed-bionic to verification-done-bionic. If it does not fix the bug for you, please add a comment stating that, and change the tag to verification-failed-bionic. In either case, without details of your testing we will not be able to proceed.

Further information regarding the verification process can be found at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QATeam/PerformingSRUVerification . Thank you in advance for helping!

N.B. The updated package will be released to -updates after the bug(s) fixed by this package have been verified and the package has been in -proposed for a minimum of 7 days.

Hi Robie, Logan - thanks for looking after this.

I've tested 5.1-2build2 (amd64) on a bionic machine and this fixes the problem for me.

Checks performed:
- The GUI /usr/bin/regina-gui starts without crashing;
- File -> Open Example -> Introductory Examples loads the sample file correctly;
- The mathematical objects that are stored in this file are displayed correctly when opened in the GUI;
- In particular, graph visualisation works correctly (for instance, double click on "Poincaré Homology Sphere", visit the Skeleton -> Graphs tab, and verify that the GUI displays a complete graph on five vertices);
- The embedded python script at the bottom of the sample file opens and runs correctly.

So everything looks good to me. I will change the tag from verification-needed-bionic to verification-done-bionic.

Best regards - Ben.

Hi - FYI, after rereading the docs, my understanding is that I should change verification-needed to verification-done also, since bionic was the only release that actually needed verifying (and this was done successfully). So I've just done this now. - Ben.

The verification of the Stable Release Update for regina-normal has completed successfully and the package is now being released to -updates. Subsequently, the Ubuntu Stable Release Updates Team is being unsubscribed and will not receive messages about this bug report.
