Bug Description

Gutsy Gibbon 7.10 - 64 bit. NVidia sound.
Sound works fine for Video, Firefox.
I've selected System-Preferences-Sound. Under the Devices tab, Events, Music and Conferencing are set to Auto Detect. Sound capture is set to ALSA. Mixer is set to NVidia CK804 (Alsa Mixer). Under the Sounds tab ESD and System Sounds are enabled. All the system sound preferences have been changed to new wav files.
When Play is selected (next to each of the wav sounds), all sounds work.
The PC is rebooted.
The Ubuntu startup sound is heard.
After logging in the New Login Sound is heard (this has been saved to a directory on my Desktop).
No other sounds are heard when opening and closing windows, selecting menu items etc
The Logout sound is not heard (in Desktop directory).

Additional information:
This also fails when using Ubuntu 7.10 32 bit. I've tried moving a WAV file from the /usr/share/sounds directory to my Desktop directory. Next I've reassigned this WAV file to all events. No sound is heard when an event is triggered, but the sound file can be played, when Play is selected, under Sound Preferences.

Me too, with gutsy/amd64.

Only differences from above are VIA 8237 onboard sound and ATI proprietary graphics driver "Catalyst 8.1" (v. 8.45.4)

I also have this problem with Via 8237 onboard and ATI prop driver. The login sound can be heard but any sound events past this stage, including logout, cannot be heard.

I resolved same issue after installing esound:
sudo apt-get install esound
Hope this solves your issue.

After installing the esound package you need to reboot your machine to let the system sound start working.
