[SRU] Option in ubuntustudio-installer pulling-in gdm3

Bug Description

[Impact]

* Users of desktops other than GNOME are erroneously installing "ubuntustudio-gnome-branding" from the package selection, causing gdm3 and all of gnome-shell to be pulled-in as dependencies. Users of desktops other than GNOME, especially if new to Linux, don't know any better and select it regardless.

* While pulling-in and configuring gdm3, dpkg waits for the user to select between gdm3 and an already-installed DM, such as lightdm or sddm.

* This upload fixes this by eliminating the "ubuntustudio-gnome-branding" from the selection.

[Test Case]

* Using any flavor other than Ubuntu proper (i.e. the GNOME) desktop, install and run ubuntustudio-installer, selecting "ubuntustudio-gnome-branding" as an option. Click the "Install" button.

* Installer will hang while awaiting DM selection instructions from the user, but are not available due to the way Ubuntu Studio Installer's tk/tcl script functions (does not present a selection dialog).

* New version does not include "ubuntustudio-gnome-branding" as a selection, so test case for new version should no longer show "ubuntustudio-gnome-branding" as a selection.

  1. Open ubuntustudio-installer
  2. Check to see if ubuntustudio-gnome-branding is an option for
     installation.
      - if NO, verification-done
      - if YES, bug still exists

[Regression Potential]

* Since nothing depends on ubuntustudio-installer to run functionally, there is no regression potential.

[Other Info]

* This was not done originally as it was thought that users would actually read the description of the package explaining that it's for the default GNOME desktop only. Unfortunately, questions on askubuntu.com and in the IRC chat room have appeared with this very issue.

Ok, in other words the test-case for testing if the bug is fixed is running ubuntustudio-installer and making sure that ubuntustudio-gnome-branding is no longer a visible option, right? Since the current Test Case is just for validating the bug being present. Might be good to make that clear there.

Hello Erich, or anyone else affected,

Accepted ubuntustudio-installer into disco-proposed. The package will build now and be available at https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubuntustudio-installer/0.04~19.04.1 in a few hours, and then in the -proposed repository.

Please help us by testing this new package. See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation on how to enable and use -proposed. Your feedback will aid us getting this update out to other Ubuntu users.

If this package fixes the bug for you, please add a comment to this bug, mentioning the version of the package you tested and change the tag from verification-needed-disco to verification-done-disco. If it does not fix the bug for you, please add a comment stating that, and change the tag to verification-failed-disco. In either case, without details of your testing we will not be able to proceed.

@sil2100 Yes, this is correct. As long as "ubuntustudio-gnome-branding' doesn't show up in the package selection, this works. The option is still there for users of the GNOME desktop to install via command line, synaptic, or other means.

Comment #5 seems to be about what the test case is rather than verifying that the upload in -proposed works. Could you add some information about the verification process that lead to the tag being changed to verification-done-disco? Thanks!

Brian, the verification is simple:

1. Open ubuntustudio-installer
2. Check to see if ubuntustudio-gnome-branding is an option for installation.
- if NO, verification-done
- if YES, bug still exists

I made the change in the description to outline that. Since there still seems to be confusion, I have further updated it.

The verification of the Stable Release Update for ubuntustudio-installer has completed successfully and the package has now been released to -updates. Subsequently, the Ubuntu Stable Release Updates Team is being unsubscribed and will not receive messages about this bug report. In the event that you encounter a regression using the package from -updates please report a new bug using ubuntu-bug and tag the bug report regression-update so we can easily find any regressions.

After installing ubuntustudio-installer 0.04~19.04.1 from disco-proposed, this bug no longer exists.
