Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and help improve us to make Ubuntu better. Please answer these questions:

* Is this reproducible?
* If so, what specific steps should we take to recreate this bug?
* What is the font you have selected for display in Thunderbird?
* If the font is set to Franklin Gothic Book, does changing the font produce the same bug as before? If the bug happens only with certain fonts, please specify them.
* Does this bug only happen when working on mails in certain languages (ex, Romanian)?

This will help us to find and resolve the problem.

Scrolling by mouse wheel in e-mail contains Franklin Gothic Book font.

Verdana for new email or reply.

This font be found in incoming e-mail (from my bussines partner). I
cannot change it.

I use thunderbird in czech language. Almost incoming and outgoing
e-mails are in czech. Only some few emails came in romanian. Afraid this
crash produce only one from them.

I solved this problem temporarily if I unchecked "Allow messages to use other fonts".

Same thing here, using Serif/sans serif/monospace fonts. My language is Western, with encoding Western (ISO-8859-1). Unchecking the option mentioned by Patrik worked for me too. Thanks!

I get a very similar crash here, and have verified it doesn't happen in the non-Ubuntu version of Thunderbird direct from Mozilla.

It happens only on specific emails in Inbox - one from a website I registered with, and another from an Outlook 2007 (on XP) account that I have at work. Both are using the Calibri font, which is the new default Font in Office 2007 and Vista - I didn't specify any special fonts on the email I sent from Outlook, just used the default Rich Text format.

I'm using Thunderbird 2.0.0.16+nobinonly-0ubuntu0.7.10.1 on Gutsy. Here's the output on starting from shell:

(gecko:5289): Pango-WARNING **: failed to create cairo scaled font, expect ugly output. the offending font is 'Calibri 10.5'
(gecko:5289): Pango-WARNING **: failed to create cairo scaled font, expect ugly output. the offending font is 'Calibri Bold 10.5'
(gecko:5289): Pango-WARNING **: failed to create cairo scaled font, expect ugly output. the offending font is 'Calibri Italic 10.5'
Segmentation fault (core dumped)

I can reproduce this every time on these 3 emails.

However, running the non-repo version of Thunderbird 2.0.0.16 does not cause this problem (same profile, shell, etc). So this is specific to the packaging done by Debian/Ubuntu.

I am installing the dbgsym version of Thunderbird to help diagnose this - had to downgrade to 2.0.0.6 but hopefully that won't matter.

I've attached the backtrace just created for this crash using thunderbird-dbgsym 2.0.0.6+nobinonly-0ubuntu1 (latest version of -dbgsym). Action to cause the crash was just to select a message that I know uses the Calibri font.

I do have Calibri installed according to fc-list and KDE Font Installer and it displays OK in the latter. However, it doesn't show up at all in OpenOffice and renders as invisible in Abiword. So perhaps there's something weird about the font or how it's been installed. Arial.ttf does show up OK installed via MS core fonts package, Calibri was just installed from a folder.

I don't really need this font, but it would be nice to stop Thunderbird crashing, and it does seem Ubuntu specific since the Mozilla version of Thunderbird 2.0.0.16 doesn't crash.

I have a workaround: install Calibri (and related fonts) version 1.0 not 1.02, as per this Ubuntu forums thread: http://ubuntu-virginia.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=3945343

This lets Thunderbird display the relevant emails without crashing, and it also fixes rendering within OpenOffice and Abiword. The Calibri font version I had before was presumably incompatible with Ubuntu in some way.

This is still a Thunderbird bug though.

One more bit of bug spam - applying the freetype update for http://www.ubuntu.com/usn/usn-643-1 and restarting X didn't fix this problem, with the bad font still installed, but reverting to 1.0 fonts did work.
