(and a dialog box containing the same message as the OP's)

Is it as simple as adding a mimetype to a file somewhere?

Hi,
I'd like to add, since the url I've posted above did not open with gnash, I've tried to open it with totem, result was the message above.
YouTube videos run with gnash in the browser or can be downloaded and converted.
My "workaround" with the posted url for now, was downloading and playing it with vlc, that was no problem.
I think it is unfortunately not that easy by just adding a MIME type, it has something to do with the codec. I'm not very familiar with this, but would be nice if I'm wrong.

I had the same error after removing gstreamer-plugins from the bad set. So check if it's installed, try with multiverse version too. Then open a file or a stream with totem.

I second this . trying to open an flv file as a http stream with all gstreamer plugins installed including FFMPEG in Gutsy ( 0.10.2-2.ubuntu1 ) .

When gstreamer- ffmpeg is removed, Codeine looks for the ffmpeg plugin so the mimetype seems correct.

however if you try to open the vidéo locally it will work , so the problem seems to be with the http source gstreamer handler .

Hi again,
now on Hardy little differences occured.
Loading the url above as stream no reaction, the window keeps black, no messages.
Loading by open file in folder also no reaction. Double click on the file works immediately.
Expected is streaming by open place given url and loading by browsing folder in nautilus.

btw. in applications+media there are now to entrances for totem, one has the command line #totem %U, the other #totem-gstreamer %U, the GUI is identic.

Hi,
still running updated Hardy I've tried again today, with copy&paste the url above.
Within Totem menu -> open place, the url was already pasted, opening, nothing happens, window stays black, although the status bar said 'playing'. I stopped, repeat the steps and the whole app darkened black, I've forced to close it.
Output from xsession-errors attached.

When I have more time I'll try the scenario with the Live CD Intrepid Alpha, since I've already used it for a different bug tracking.
Thanks for hanging on.

Hi Brian,
confirm. I didn't use Totem-YouTube for a while. After I've received your discription via mail I've tried it right away and yes, same error here.
>>"An error occurred... ffdemux_swf: Element doesn't implement handling of this stream. Please file bug."

There was an update from a gstreamer package and maybe since that time it doesn't work anymore, it wasn't a problem before using this plugin. Hope that someone makes a reverse on this package.
According to your discription, swfdec is still playing YouTube Videos, but not as flawlessly as before.

Hi Sam,
That bug has been flagged as private for security reasons! I have no idea why but the info I posted here is the same anyway.
Youtube videos do not play at all anymore with either swfdec or gnash.
If this is a gstreamer issue I wish i knew how to get the attention of the developers on that,
I did get a reply on the private bug stating that an update to Intrepid cured the problem. Updates always scare me!

Hi Brian,
upgrade to Intrepid? Unfortunately this cannot be the answer for Hardy LTS.
The problem with swfdec or gnash according YouTube website is in my view not related to the plugin from Totem.
e.g. swfdec version in official source is old, the new one, according to their website, is doing much better on this issues. I don't use gnash anymore since videos on YouTube don't work here since Hardy LTS (with Gutsy they did), therefore I've switched to swfdec. But the plugin in Totem worked until you brought up this issue and lead me to test it here.

For the record I've filed a new bug
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/totem/+bug/291275

I upgraded my other PowerBook G3 to Intrepid and after tweaking a bit to be able to run a Gnome Desktop (a bug in libpixman.so specific to PowerPC) and the Totem plugins work great! the BBC plugin is nice too. Also can watch the BBC videos embeeded in firefox, gnash plays everything, so far. Intrepid is a big improvement in the video arena.
