The machine is a Dell Optiplex sx280 with a 250Gb hard disk.

Please try one of the later builds of Hardy -- the most recent
is from Feb. 22 -- and see if you run into the same problem.

If this is a new disk, try going into rescue mode and partition manually with cfdisk.

Format the new Linux partition with:

mkfs /dev/sdb5

(Make sure you use the correct device number.)

Then check for integrity:

fsck -cc /dev/sdb5

Once you have verified the disk, you can be more confident during installation.

Decided to be more conservative. Disk replaced and today installed Ubuntu
version 7.10. You may close this bug for now. Thanks for you answer before.

Closing at the reporter's request.

It does seem from the logs that there were pretty serious problems with the old disk (all those UncorrectableError messages).
