Bug Description

The player totem-gstreamer, don't open any kind of file, even pure avi or mpeg.
I solved this problem once installing totem-xine, but this is not a part of the
original distribuition.
I would like to now how to use totem-gstreamer to make all kind of formats
works. The windows plugins don't take any efects.
Another problem is that it don't play DVD. It requires libcss2 (or something
like that), if I installed it, the meta-package from portuguese brazil is
uninstalled and I can't reinstaled it even if I take libcss2 from the computer.

Thanks for your bug.

* what distribution/version of totem do you use?
* do you have gstreamer0.8-dvd installed?
* what package do you want to reinstall? what error do you get?
* what architecture do you use?

That works fine here with the current versions

i have the same problem here with totem and kaffeine. i'm using kubuntu 5.10
(after a dist-upgrade from 5.04).

kaffeine is 0.7 of kubuntu 5.10.
i have nearly all packages of gstreamer installed (axcept for
gstreamer0.8-mikmod/aa).
audio output (amarok with arts) works fine.

the programm always complains about missing plugins to play the content (normal
errorfree mpeg1 or avi). With the 5.04 version everything worked fine till the
update...

found other persons with the same problem:
http://www.ubuntu-forum.de/artikel/3583/Videosystem-seit-Breezy-im-Eimer.html
(german forum i'm afraid)
they solved the problem by installing kaffeine-xine (out of universe)...

I am also getting the same problem where Totem does not work with my DVD. Totem keeps complaining that I don't have the correct plugins installed. I had the GStreamer base plugins. I have installed all of the 0.8 Gstreamer plugins now. It still isn't working, and I am still getting same problem. I have a Sony Vaio laptop if that is any help. My feeling is that this is not a medium priority problem, but should be added as a high priority problem.

Totem version 1.4.1
GStreamer 0.10.6

Chris, is your issue specific to DVD? DVD playing is lacking with gstreamer0.10 at the moment, that's not a bug but a feature missing. Note that installing gstreamer0.8 packages is of no use since desktop apps use gstreamer0.10 now

Sebastian,

Thanks for responding, but your news about Totem means
that movie viewing is a major feature missing. Ubuntu Linux displays it in it s
menus as Movie Player. If that is not true, then it should be removed from
Ubuntu until DVD functionality is provided. This also means that there is nothing
that I can use to access my DVD player on Linux. If you ask me, I am not thrilled
with Linux at all. Most of the video functionality is missing on Linux. Audo is
almost as bad. I am almost ready to put back Windows again. At least audio
and video worked properly with Windows.

What movies are this?

Did you install gstreamer0.10-plugins-good, gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly, gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad, gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg, gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly-multiverse and gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad-multiverse (and maybe gstreamer0.10-pitfdll if you want to use win32 codecs)? This will get you support for almost all formats but that DVD playback isn't working is a known bug. You could use a xine-based player for this, for example gxine or xine-ui.

Thanks for answering. I found that I had to install the totem/xine player instead
of the totem/gstreamer. Even when I install this, the totem player would completely
disappear. I then did some more searching, and I found that I had to reinstall the
libdevcss2 library for my DVD player to work correctly. Once that was installed
everything started working.
