Bug Description

panel icon chooser browse doesnt allow selection for launchers. All images are
greyed out and unselectable.

steps to reproduce:
1.right click on panel.

2.click add to panel.

3.click custom application launcher

4.click no icon.

5.click browse.

6.browse to any icon.

ah, I see. I didn't realise it worked like that.

The problem therefore is that after you select the directory containing the icon
the icon chooser does not update. You must click on the address bar and press
enter to see the icons in the selected folder.

I think a file chooser with an image preview would be more suitable.

I see a lot of people getting confused by this, questions appear very often in the support forums. While it's probably not possible to replace it with a better dialog for Dapper, would it be possible to change the title of that file selector (and possibly the button opening it) with "Choose folder" or something similar? This would make it at least more obvious how to use that dialog, and should probably be only a string change, which are not yet frozen.

Just a band-aid of course, but better than nothing until an improved method of choosing icons is ready.

This upload fixes the issue:

   * debian/patches/01_fix_gnome_icon_entry.patch:
     - patch by Travis Watkins <email address hidden>
     - update icon list when a new dir is selected
     - disable preview area in file chooser, not needed as we're selecting a
       directory
     - filter out non-directory items in the file chooser
       (Ubuntu: #6115, #19454)
