Bug Description

Binary package hint: compiz

Just installed compiz settings manager, 3D is enabled & working. All other compiz settings working ok but when i enter the "Window decorations" I cannot get the menu shadow. I am getting a pink shadow which comes & goes while playing with the settings. This pink shadow remains irrespective of the colour or opacity settings. When I restart, all shadows are Pink! (can you imagine). Please fix this little critter.
Thanks.
PS: Hardy Heron seems to be working fine - great job so far.........

The pink shadows on menus are gone now. Must have been one of the updates since that removed them.

They were replaced by a golden orange glow/shadow around top-level application windows.

Disturbingly, this glow also comes and goes with no discernible pattern.

This is with "Visual Effects" set to Normal.

Is the pink halo issue still present on an up-to-date Hardy installation?

this bug is still present with my fully up to date hardy 64bit install , in fact it just appeared a couple of days ago for me along with a couple of other glitches , and seems to be connected to them , my custom title bar setup does not take effect on boot , I use compiz with the gtk window decorator but on boot it seems to try to use some emerald theme parts and some gtk parts , to get things right I have to start compiz-fusion Icon ( it nolonger starts up on boot either ) and switch to emerald then right back to gtk and then all is normal until next shutdown.this just started with the updates to compiz on march 3 ,2008.

I've heard some people talk that it is a bug in the Nvidia device drivers...

To me, it seems to be a bug in the NVidia drivers in the repos. Didn't try the original ones for some weeks, but with them working the shadows were black as they should.

@Molotov: Do you remember your last working version?

Reading related bugs and threads on different forums, it appears like 169.07 might have introduced the issue.

It would be interesting to hear from someone who has the latest original driver installed (not from Ubuntu restricted drivers).

It was the 169.12 from nvidia.com. Didn't try it anymore because it caused low resolution settings when I didn't save a profile in "screens and graphic" (don't know what's its name in English).

Confirm the bug exists on a homebuilt AMD system, with ASUS M2N-E SLI motherboard and (single) GeForce8800GTS with 320MB of VRAM. System is fully-updated, fresh-installed Heron.

Also note that changing shadow effects in CCSM has absolutely no effect; changing shadow effects in Emerald makes shadows disappear completely until emerald is restarted. Suggest bug is with Emerald.

Confirming the bug still exists after the final release of 8.04. On GeForce 8400GS, using the restricted drivers.

just to clarify, the problem is that there are no shadows at all (not even pink). The menus and windows are all shadow-less
