Bug Description

lspci recognizes my wireless card. The led on the front of my computer does not work. iwconfig cannot see any wireless extension. So even though the card is recognized on the lspci, I still cannot get any wireless.

lspci:
00:1f.3 SMBus: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) SMBus Controller (rev 03)
02:00.0 Ethernet controller: Marvell Technology Group Ltd. 88E8039 PCI-E Fast Ethernet Controller (rev 15)
06:00.0 Ethernet controller: Atheros Communications, Inc. AR242x 802.11abg Wireless PCI Express Adapter (rev 01)

Also, I tried installing madwifi and configuring options to get the card working. This also was a failure.

Unfortunately, it appears there is no support for this hardware yet, there are similar support request on the Madwifi project's bug tracking system

Have you given any attempt to use ndiswrapper? There doesn't seem to be much movement on supporting this device in the Madwifi project.

Yes i've tried ndiswrapper. This doesn't not work either. I don't think ndiswrapper or madwifi is the problem. I think it might be a hardware problem with the led not being turned on. I've heard rumors on how to turn this on but none of the instructions have worked for me. I think this is a new problem.

Sorry I jumped a bit too fast in marking this as a duplicate of a similar issue.

For the record (and search engines):

dmesg has:
[ 34.558084] wifi%d: unable to attach hardware: 'Hardware revision not supported' (HAL status 13)

lspci detailed output includes:
04:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Atheros Communications, Inc. AR5418 802.11abgn Wireless PCI Express Adapter [168c:0024] (rev 01)
Subsystem: D-Link System Inc Unknown device [1186:3a6f]

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

Hello Leann Ogasawara!

I tried running a boot cd with the new Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10. This did not solve my issue regarding the Marvell Atheros card. I wanted to let you know immediately so that more possible actions could be taken. I will run the cd again and post lspci and dmesg and post it here for your use. Thanks!

I've also got this problem running an a Sony Vaio NR21J/S and the official release of Ubuntu 8.10. The wireless connection worked in 8.04 using madwifi drivers. lspci shows the card but there's no entry in either ifconfig or iwconfig.

Hello all, I wasted 2 days to get my wifi working with ubuntu 8.10 but could not get it right. I tried all ubuntu forums and every possible step I could find. Finally I gave up and installed Fedora10. It works like a charm on my NR220E. Not just the wifi but all the function keys works by default. I did not had to change a single configuration. The only downside with Fedora....it doesnt have mp3 and flash support which can be added in 2 min.

so if you can live without ubuntu..I would suggest Fedora 10.

cheers
PALs.

Unfortunately it seems this bug is still an issue. Can you confirm this issue exists with the most recent Jaunty Jackalope 9.04 release - http://www.ubuntu.com/news/ubuntu-9.04-desktop . If the issue remains in Jaunty, please test the latest upstream kernel build - https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Let us know your results. Thanks.

I just bought an Acer Aspire One Netbook from the Cell Phone Kiosk in Costco. This model is different from the standard Aspire One in that it has an SSD drive in lieu of a standard 2.5 HD. It's a nicer computer that is thinner and has a better layout of the USB ports. Unfortunately it has the Atheros AR242x 802.11abg Wireless PCI Express Adapter (rev 01), and it doesnt work.

This is really too bad as this computer costs $100.00 more than the standard one, and it looks as though I will be forced to return it.

I'm having the same problem,
my wireless card is down after upgrading from 8.10 to 9.04
it was working fine on 8.10
I'm having an atheros card with madwifi tools installed

P.S: or tell me how to go back to 8.10 without re-installing
