Bug Description

Binary package hint: thunderbird

Thunderbird should register the .eml (e-mail message) file type (as in Windows systems). We run a small company and have just migrated a PC from Win XP to Ubuntu Gutsy + KDE 4 and we noticed that ll the messages that we had saved as .eml were recognized as "Text documents". I manually created a new file association, but this is quite a bug, don't you think?

How to reproduce this bug. Open Thunderbird, clic on a message in Inbox, choose "Save as" and enter the place & filename. The program will suggest the .eml extension). Now use Dolphin or another file manager to browse that folder and go to the file properties. It will be marked as "text document" (which might be right as MIME identification, but misses sense as file-assocation).

Maybe this bug should be adressed to the Mozilla guys as well, but they don't provide an installable linux version, so I thought you could change this behaviour in ubuntu.

Thanks,

Lillipuziano

Quoting your bug : """Now use Dolphin or another file manager to browse that folder and go to the file properties.""", you mean to say that the .eml file is not recognized in file managers? If the bug is not associated properly, is it a Thunderbird bug or the file manager bug?

I have no idea about. Welll, actually I think it's a Thunderbird bug, because it should register the .eml extension (there are some specifications from freedesktop.org to do so).

Hope to be helpful.

This works from the command line to open .eml files: thunderbird /full/path/to/file.eml

Is "text/eml" a valid MIME Type? I imagine it must be. Could this just be added to the MIME Type field in the .desktop file?

I can confirm that the issue is still present in Jaunty. An e-mail reader should be set as default handler for .eml files.

This issue was fixed in upstream bug report:
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=261559
which is showing "VERIFIED FIXED" since 2008-08-07
but no target release given. Thunderbird will only
register itself to handle .eml files when set as the
default mail client.
Tested ok with Thunderbird 60.4 in Ubuntu 18.04.
No activity here for over 8 years so closing as fixed.
