Bug Description

Binary package hint: mplayer

Insert DVD or DVDr>Open Mplayer> Right Click screen> Select DVD> Error appears.

The DVD drive is not responsive at all. DVDR and DVD have been inserted and when right clicking Mplayer and choosing DVD this error appears:

"No stream found to handle url dvd://1"

There is no icon on the desktop (like for audio cds) that says a DVD is in the bay.

I assume this also means that DVDs will not be able to burn as well since the drive has 0 functionality. I have no workaround at all. I have installed all the recommended codecs and restarted many times to no avail.

This is on a Fujitsu Laptop using Hardy 8.04 Alpha 5.

Duplicated on an AMD64 desktop (os is i386) using Hardy 8.04 Alpha 5. This happens in Totem and mplayer as well. Some people reported that Totem's "Play Disc" option works, but it also gave the same error for me in this case.

This is still an issue for me as I tested again last night.

UPDATE: After last nights upgrade to Hardy Alpha 6 I can confirm that this is still an issue.

Insert DVD or DVDr>Open Mplayer> Right Click screen> Select DVD> Error appears.

"No stream found to handle url dvd://1"

This was the error for DVDR and DVD as well.

Not an mplayer bug. Probably a kernel bug if it affects so many apps, even those that don't use HAL.

Hi Juan,

Per the kernel team's bug policy, can you please attach the following information. Please be sure to attach each file as a separate attachment.

* cat /proc/version_signature > version.log
* dmesg > dmesg.log
* sudo lspci -vvnn > lspci-vvnn.log

Did anyone try adding "-dvd-device" to the mplayer or gmplayer start command?

I found in Hardy that this command won't work:

gmplayer dvd://1

It results in the error "No stream found to handle url dvd://1"

However, this command works:

gmplayer -dvd-device /dev/scd0 dvd://1

Same problem with a recent fresh install of Kubuntu Hardy/KDE3. The problem does not appear to be a kernel bug, but a misconfiguration in /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-cd.rules The system-wide fix for this is available here... http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=5014367&postcount=4 The Mplayer-specific fixes above also work.

Three months and no progress on this... sounds to me like someone doesn't want Ubuntu users to play commercial DVDs.

I just dist upgraded to "stable" 8.04 and I am having this problem. I followed the steps above to fix udev 70-...-cd.rules. It didn't make a difference. I am using mplayer. In its preferences dialog under the misc tab it says /dev/dvd and the udev file also lists /dev/dvd. For some reason Mplayer still reports "no stream found to handle url dvd//1"? Any other solution out there?

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

This bug is still present in Intrepid final and all updates as of the date of this post. MPlayer tries to use /dev/dvd, however, the correct device is /dev/cdrom0 in my case. Totem works as intended.

The wiki article mentioned above has nothing to do with this bug.

I can confirm the bug in intrepid 8.10
I followed Bálint Magyar's advice above and fixed the issue. Under Preferences > Misc i set my DVD device to /dev/cdrom1 and it worked like a charm.

Since I have a CD drive and I DVD drive (both internal) I executed a 'ls /dev/cdrom*' command. It returned

/dev/cdrom1
/dev/cdrom2

It turned out cdrom1 is my DVD drive on my machine.

Bálint, have you tried IgnorantGuru's fix to /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-cd.rules? What's the output you get if you type "cd /dev; ls -l scd* dvd* cd*"?
