Unable to start the settings manager 'gnome-settings-daemon'.

Bug Description

Unable to start the settings manager 'gnome-settings-daemon'.
Without the GNOME settings manager running, some preferences may not take effect. This could indicate a problem with Bonobo, or a non-GNOME (e.g. KDE) settings manager may already be active and conflicting with the GNOME settings manager.

Error window appears on startup and when right clicking the desktop and choosing Change Desktop Background.

There is no loss of functionality. Compiz even still seems to be enabled. The main problem is the window theme is a basic grey that i did not choose. Also its very ugly starting the computer with an error box as well as receiving an error when attempting to change backgrounds.

Version: Hardy ALpha 5
When did this start? Mar 2, after i was informed by notification there was update available.

Summary: same old bug, new version. tried several fixes like changing the entries in x11.did not work. reinstalled dbus. did not work.

I was seeing a "parse error" after trying to start gnome-settings-daemon,
right after a line about "xrandr", so for now I move the following 2 files
elsewhere:

./usr/lib/gnome-settings-daemon-2.0/libxrandr.so
./usr/lib/gnome-settings-daemon-2.0/xrandr.gnome-settings-plugin

and I am able to start a gnome session with my previously configured
settings. Apologies I don't have a copy of the error message I was seeing, I
could try returning those 2 files to their original locations.

Thanks!

Thank you for responding. Yes I am still seeing this bug. There was also
another update last night that did not fix this problem. So far the
affected items are: Screen Saver not enabling, Desktop icon theme will
not change, Window border theme will not change. I would be more than
happy to attach a screenshot for you. If I am thinking correctly the
~/.xsession-errors are the error boxes that appear when I log in? If I
am not correct please let me know. Thank you.

Hi,

If you could please restore those two files, and then log in
again and attach your ~/.xsession-errors file to this report.

Thanks,

James

Hi,

By ~/.xsession-errors I mean a file called ".xsession-errors" in your
home directory. It is a hidden file, so you will have to display of
those to see it.

It contains lots of information about what has been going on in your
sesssion, and should contain the information about the crash that we
need.

Thanks,

James
