No sound in Alsa after recent update

Bug Description

I have no sound at all. I assume this is after update in last couple of days. Between hardy alpha5 and 6.

This is using an Maudio 2496 card that I've used with both gutsy and fiesty.
The strange part is that I get no errors and it looks like it is working, for example I can see the VU meter of envy24control working and programs do not complain about no audio. I have tried many programs including hydrogen through jackd, vlc, youtube and amazon.com flash in firefox.
I know the sound card is okay since i booted up a 64Studio Live cd and it worked fine.
I have tried a few older kernels that I know worked with audio in the past and they do not work now.

I have the same issue on an Acer Travelmate C110, that is, I need to run "sudo /etc/init.d/alsa-utils reset" on every boot.

Running 8.04 Beta, fully updated, problem present on -generic and -386, Intel AC'97 Audio Controller.
