Bug Description

I decided to report it as a bug, because this was ok in previous version of HH, but now it's too often... And there were some historical unresolved similar issues in forum, it has some common base I think.

Problem:
PS/2 keyboard works during boot (grub/console/other system), but doesn't work when gdm logon screen appears. I cannot restart gdm - no keyboard. Mouse works (I can tried restart via mouse, but in HH it has different problems sometimes, not a task for this bug). There is only way - reset PC and try again. After several attempts gdm starts with normal successful detection of keyboard and I can login and normal work.

Affected versions (I can write version of kernels, this is what I know from boot.lst, I don't know file versions of keyboard driver etc.):
Mainly 2.6.24-10-x - 2.6.24-11-x (more restarts than keyboard detections)
Sometimes in 2.6.24-7 - 2.6.24-8 (in 2.6.24-8 I think)

Non-affected versions:
From 2.6.20-16 (when I upgraded to developer branch of HH) to 2.6.24-7
During this era HH was fantastic for me. And no keyboard problem...

Did other systems in PC affected?
I have 4 OS here, never saw this in other OS.

Did you see it in previous versions of Ubuntu?
Yes. I saw it sometimes in GG.... I had EE and FF - perfect, without any keyboard problem. But I saw this problem sometimes in GG,
I upgraded early in the beginning of this years to HH, works perfectly, but problems started in 2.6.24-8 again (sometimes) and horror started in 2.6.24-10 - 2.6.24-11 - more restarts than working systems.

Can you describe your hw?
Mainboard: Asus P4P8X
Chipset: Intel i865
CPU: P4 2,8 GHz
keyboard: PS/2 (regardless manufacturer or type, I tested a lot of types, genius, benq etc.)

Did you tried changes in xorg. conf?
Yes, I made some attempts to change pc104-105 or layout. I didn't try different driver.
Section "InputDevice"
 Identifier "Generic Keyboard"
 Driver "kbd"
Option "CoreKeyboard" //I tried without it
 Option "XkbRules" "xorg"
Option "XkbModel" "pc104" // I tried different models "pc105" etc.
Option "XkbLayout" "cz" // I tried different layouts
I tried othe settings in gnome control center, without success.

Can you add some log?
Maybe - but I need some help. Send me info want to send. Because system is out of control without keyboard, I have to reset PC and boot from different media - then save log what you want.

Note: System loose keyboard in gdm - during starting X-win... Console, other systems, grub - everywhere system works with keyboard without any problems. It has to be somewhere in gdm - but not in xorg.conf, I reviewed older files. There have to be some changes, because more than 1,5 month I worked in HH without any problem - this started after a lot of updates, something had to be changed.
I am not the only one user of i865 chipset, so this could happen to other people so I want to help to solve it.

Ask me for details, please...

Regards

Slavek Samal

I have the same issue here. I installed Hardy yesterday and it was working fine but after updates this morning I no longer have a keyboard. I can't give you much informatiion because I can't even log in. It works fine from the recovery console but not when it comes to GDM. I have tried reconfiguring X and tried using an external USB keyboard. I am still dual booting Gutsy which works fine.

Hello, it seems to be better for last 2 days: i have keyboard after each
boot.
What was changed:
- hundreds of updates, I cannot say which was the most important,
because there were a lot HAL and GDM changes.
- I updated BIOS on mb Asus p4p8x to latest beta version (from 1016 to
1021 beta), but I am not sure about this change, because I haven't
similar problem in other OS on the same mb with 1016 bios.

It seems to be any change in HH update from my point of view, but I am
not able to say which one :-(

A possible fix: please try to disable legacy usb support in your bios.

I had a similar problem with a friend's computer: Logitech PS/2 keyboard, USB mouse (used directly on USB port or with PS/2 adapter) and most of the times he had no keyboard in GDM. The first tests showed that this fix works.

Same problem for me: I upgraded a critical machine from 6.06LTS to 8.04LTS, and I end up with a non-working GDM, very frustrating... I cannot type login and password, but I can switch consoles (e.g. Ctrl-Alt-F1) so the keyboard is *somehow* functional in GDM! Mouse is OK, and keyboard works fine in consoles.

Is there at least a workaround to access X? (eg. install xdm or similar)

In my case, it happened that module "kbd" was missing! (a bug in the upgrade from 6.06?) So I manually installed package xserver-xorg-input-kbd, and now everything is working fine. So my pb was probably not the same as Slavek's one (which seems to be episodic), but maybe Stephen should have a look to the output of cmd "dpkg -S kbd_drv.o" to check if the driver is properly installed.

I've reinstalled xserver-xorg-input-kbd several times without any improvement. I've even configured my user for auto-login. In this case, sometimes, a error pops-up while loading the gnome session that says something like - the session could not be loaded ... and nothing works (keyboard, mouse), so I cannot even press the ok button on the error message. The only fix for that is a reset (using the reset from PC case) and the hope that at the next reboot the session will be loaded.

Hi samal,

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue for you? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? (ISOs are available from cdimage.ubuntu.com)

If it remains an issue, could you also attach a new /var/log/Xorg.0.log?
Thanks in advance.

The output of lspci -vvnn would also be worth having.
