To summarize the status on these 4 packages:

lunar unapproved:
virtualbox-7.0.8-1ubuntu1
virtualbox-hwe-7.0.8-dfsg-1ubuntu1.23.04.1

lunar-proposed:
virtualbox-ext-pack 7.0.8-1
last error in excuses is a dependency problem (probably on what's in unapproved)

lunar release:
virtualbox-guest-additions-iso 7.0.8-1
virtualbox-ext-pack 7.0.6-1
virtualbox-7.0.6-dfsg-1
virtualbox-hwe-7.0.6-dfsg-1ubuntu1.23.04.1

My first question is if virtualbox-guest-additions-iso is usable in lunar, given it's at version 7.0.8 and the test is at 7.0.6? Or, is the rest usable given -guest-additions-iso is ahead?

Second questions is if virtualbox has an MRE or some other SRU exception to allow such version bumps in a stable release? I didn't find anything about it in https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates. Sorry, it's the first time I deal with a virtualbox SRU. I checked an older one, and apparently it was the same (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/virtualbox/+bug/1973275)

Hello, actually this request comes after we considered de facto virtualbox eligible for SRU.

We did SRU microreleases since even before 14.04, and probably even before the creation of the wiki page with the list of SRU tools.

So, after around 10 years of microreleases updates of virtualbox, virtualbox-lts-*, virtualbox-hwe, virtualbox-ext-pack, virtualbox-guest-additions-iso, I would like to
formally add them to the wiki page.

thanks

Gianfranco

src:virtualbox is both host and guest, but 7.0.6 is compatible with 7.0.8, so no issues w.r.t. guest additions pack being a different version.

However, for ext-pack in the past some incompatibilities between versions were spot, this is why I enforce ext-pack to be the same version as virtualbox, to make sure people upgrade them together.

Virtualbox is still at version 7.0.6, though oddly enough the Guest Additions ISO package (virtualbox-guest-additions-iso) is at 7.0.8, is there any ETA on getting everything up to 7.0.8 (or even 7.0.10)? 7.0.8 fixes some graphical artifacts when using a Windows 7 guest, and I'd rather not have to use a PPA tot get the fix.

Manfred Hampl proposed the following answer:
Apparently the kernel version 6.2.* and virtual package 6.1.32 are
incompatible.

I suggest that you enable jammy-updates for multiverse in your package
management configuration and try with virtualbox 6.1.38

version 6.1.38-dfsg-3~ubuntu1.22.04.1
available in jammy-updates

fixes the problem.

I'd expect the Test Plan for updates to virtualbox to follow / include the tests listed at the virtualbox updates wiki page e.g.:

Start a windows VM (generally w10, or w11).
Update the guest additions from iso pack inside the VM.
Reboot the VM.
Check if the VM starts correctly and the acceleration works.
Start a linux VM (generally ubuntu LTS or Debian stable).
Update the guest additions from iso pack inside the VM.
Reboot the VM.
Check if the VM starts correctly and the acceleration works.
Remove guest additions and install the virtualbox-guest-x11 package (linux only).
Check if vboxdrv is correctly built, check if *.ko modules are built on the target linux VM.
Install virtualbox inside the VM and check if it can start correctly.

Host OS: Ubuntu 23.10.

Used Windows 10 Home and Ubuntu 23.10 as the guest VMs. The only step that went oddly was when installing virtualbox-guest-x11 from -proposed, after installation I couldn't find vboxdrv, though I did see VBox-related .ko files in the VM. I assume the file is named something else now since otherwise things seemed to work, even nested virtualization.

I think the reason I had difficulties earlier was because I was uninstalling the guest additions the wrong way (I tried to use `VBoxLinuxAdditions.run uninstall` but it looks like that was incorrect).

Windows 11 Pro and Ubuntu 23.04 were used as the guest OSes.

Win11 notes: had some trouble getting automatic guest display resizing to work after installing Guest Additions, but after fighting with it a bit, it worked. Everything else worked as expected.

Ubuntu 23.04 notes: Most everything worked, but after removing Guest Additions and installing virtualbox-guest-x11 from -proposed, some significant instabilities were hit if 3d acceleration was enabled (windows failing to render right, mouse pointer getting "misaligned", and one full-on VM hang). Other than that everything seemed to work right, including nested virt.

Host OS: Ubuntu 22.04, HWE kernel. I believe Simon Quigley already took care of the GA kernel testing.

Windows 10 Pro and Ubuntu 22.04 were used as the guest OSes.

Win10 notes: Hit a strange issue with 3d acceleration after installing Guest Additions - the taskbar and start menu went transparent. This is a known issue that is about four years old according to Reddit (https://www.reddit.com/r/virtualbox/comments/f96q4s/windows_10_build_2004_and_guest_additions/) so not a regression AFAICT. Disabling transparency seemed to fix the issue. Everything else worked well.

Ubuntu 22.04 notes: With Guest Additions and without 3d accel, I get strange graphical corruption. Also there are some cursor animation anomalies (namely animated cursors seem to not actually be animated at all). Both could be reproduced with the older version of VBox, so not a regression.

Also with Ubuntu 22.04, there was also a bit of graphical corruption in 3d accel mode, but less severe and it was transient (went away after a guest reboot). This was with the -proposed version, I couldn't reproduce it more than once with -proposed and didn't reproduce it with the earlier version.

This gets a stamp of approval from me, @tsimonq2 if you also completed your testing without issues, could you mark Jammy as verification-done? Thanks!
