about-ubuntu page for es_ES locale is incorrect

The reason for this bug is that the translations for es and es_ES are being done separately by the translator teams. There is nothing we can do in ubuntu-docs to prevent this - you need to talk to the Spanish translation teams and the Launchpad translation developers to understand why this is being done and to resolve it.

However, I must disagree with it specially for the "philosophical" meaning behind the answer:

1. The bug is already there. Therefore it should not be closed.

2. It seems just obvious mistake: no sense to show English page in Spanish computer. Easy to solve: just replace file with existing one.

3. I am Spanish and it is surprising to find the presentation page of Ubuntu in English, it will cause bad impressions to new Spanish users.

4. IMHO my only interface with Ubuntu team(s) should be bug reporting. Sorry, I cannot dedicate much time to OS fixes/tweaking now (hint: I have switched from raw Debian to Ubuntu).

5. I have emailed https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-l10n-es group, but I'm not allowed (rejected my message) :-(

After your response, I guess it should be understood that translators must take responsibility for their own files. If confirmed, I would file a new bug (may be wishlist?) suggesting this package should be split into several sub-packages (one for each translation). It would be more coherent and similar to other l10n packages in Ubuntu.

I sincerely believe this bug should not be closed. Ask support to Spanish translators if needed, so they can post their opinions here.

I'm the official Ubuntu Spanish Translators Team. I don't know the origin of the bug, but I do know that 'es_ES' must not exists; only 'es'.

Daniel - when I closed the bug, I didn't mean that this isn't a problem - it clearly is. It just isn't a problem that can be solved or is caused by the ubuntu-docs package, because each time translations are imported, the problem will come back. So I'm closing the task on that package again.

This sounds like a problem with Rosetta - it shouldn't permit translations of es_ES. I'm opening a task on that.

(A workaround for now would be for someone with the relevant permissions to upload the es translation to the es_ES translation.)

We have to allow es_ES and similar locales sometimes so per-locale modifications can be made. Eg. gweather read the default location from a translation, so GNOME's weather-locations used to provide es_ES, es_MX, es_AR and similar with just the default weather location changed (not the best way to do it, but that's reality).

Still, it is marked as a hidden language in Launchpad, so it would not be shown in the list of languages unless somebody uploaded a PO file with that name or hacked URL to get to the relevant page. Basically, we can try removing the file from the database, but you'd (Ubuntu translators, and mdke for ubuntu-docs) also need to make sure it's not being updated any more. Maybe assign Ubuntu Spanish Translators with the job of maintaining es_ES as well (so not everybody can mess with it)?

Once you solve the social issues, we can help with removing es_ES translations from the database.
