There's a patch in the upstream bug which I've tested and solves the bug.

This will be fixed with the next upload in a week or so.

This bug was fixed in the package gcalctool - 5.22.1-0ubuntu1

---------------
gcalctool (5.22.1-0ubuntu1) hardy; urgency=low

  * New upstream version
    - fixes the multiply problem on some keyboards (LP: #212274)
  * Removal of the shifting patch (03_shifing_keys) since it is incorporated
    upstream.
  * Addition of a patch (03_fix_power_interpretation) since it has been
    forgotten upstream (LP: #204682)
