For those experiencing problems: Please do not update your kernel without all of the different parts (including linux-restricted-modules-generic) unless you know to choose a different kernel from the grub boot screen if things go wrong.

That package should be updated soon and this bug will be fixed.

I've performed a system upgrade through Ubuntu's update manager and I was also left without any restricted drivers. To make matters worse, the "Hardware Drivers" application claimed, after the update, that there wasn't any hardware needing restricted drivers in the system, which end up forcing me to perform a complete reinstall.

Confirmed here (Kubuntu Hardy). Did my daily upgrade using Adept and am now in the same situation as everyone else.

Same problem. I couldn't install the new kernel so I did a dist-upgrade ... stupid! Now I don't have drivers for my nvida card, oh well.

By the way GreatBunzinni I don't think you need to reinstall ubuntu, just wait for the restricted modules update.

Still not working. Did an update and tried to run the partial-upgrade again with the same message.

Regarding the new duplicate bug report, I would like to mention that in my case the problem occurred when I was already running 8.04 Beta out of a fresh, clean, CD-ROM install and not from an upgrade from 7.10.

Haexn: as the upgrade left me without a network connection, it would be hard to update the restricted pacakges even if they were automatically present in the repositories.
