hello, i tested even now the pre-release of fedora 10 and i could change the brightness with the applet from the panel. the fn-keys doesn't work too in fedora. the question is now, where the difference is between fedora and ubuntu.

Hi Chris

I installed your patched hal-info and rebooted the pc. When I press the funktionkey the applet/picture popup and the statusbar is changing, but without taken effect on changing backlight. After I pressed the funktionkey the keyboard shows no reaktion for a while, accept changing the status of the popup.

Drunkenkillas workaround works fine.

Groschensammler - I spoke to drunkenkilla on IRC, and he experiences the same behaviour as you. It seems the patch maps the brightness keys to the correct Xkeysyms, because you both see the brightness indicator on the screen, but something else is happening.

I assume that you are both using the NVIDIA proprietary driver? Would you mind trying my patch with the open source nv or vesa driver instead? I've read a lot about brightness keys not working with the proprietary NVIDIA driver.

Thanks

I'll create another patch later with the additional non-functioning keys incorporated. Could you also both confirm that none of these non-working keys produces an ACPI event? To do this, run "acpi_listen" in a terminal and watch for any output as you press each of these broken keys.

Thanks

drunkenkilla - was your last comment with or without the NVIDIA driver?

I have uploaded another version of hal-info with quirks for your WLAN key and backlight keys. Could you confirm whether these work? (you might need to wait a little while for the new version to build).

Could you also confirm whether any of the other keys work (if they are meant to do anything):

- Fn+F2 - Battery icon
- Fn+F7
- Fn+F8
- Fn+F10
- Mail key
- WWW key
- Mute and volume keys

Hi Chris,
my last comment was with the nv driver. When i'm using FN-Key+brightness down, the brightness is changing but it's going completely down to 40%. It has 5 steps but it allways going down or up completely. The next bug is that the keyboard after using the FN-Key+brightness doesn't work correctly.

I have tested the other FN-Keys, which you have posted. The mute and volume keys are working correct. When i'm pressing the FN-Key+WWW-Key, the startpage of firefox is loading but after that nothing words even the touchpad. I had to reboot the system over tty1. The other keys don't work.

Hi Chris + drunkenkilla

Tested your old release, it works on my laptop like drunkenkillas. acpi_listen gives no output for any keys, only "battery BAT1 00000080 00000001"

@drunkenkilla
if my keyboard doesn't react, i switch to tty1 and go back (strg+alt+f7) it works again

----------
Tested hal-info - 20081013-0ubuntu3+chrisccoulson3 + NVIDIA driver:

- Fn+F1 - Help --> it works!
- Fn+F2 - Battery icon --> no funktion
- Fn+F3 - euro-symbol --> doesn't insert the euro sign
- Fn+F4 - display switch --> not tested
- Fn+F5 - backlight on/off --> no funktion
- Fn+F6 - mute --> it works!
- Fn+F7 - Samsung MagicDoctor (Windows) --> no funktion
- Fn+F8 - easy speedup manager (Windows) --> no funktion
- Fn+F9 - WLAN on/off --> no funktion
- Fn+F10 - touchpad on/off --> it works!
- Fn+F11 - numlock --> it works!
- Fn+F12 - scroll lock --> no funktion
- WWW key --> nautilus or if open startpage in browser - it works! (no hanging)
- backlight keys --> indicator comes up without taken effect + no reaction of keyboard
- volume keys --> it works
- Mail key --> there isn't such a key

I wrote in Bug 295251:

"I come from 'Bug 219116 Multiple hotkeys don't work with Samsung R70 T7300 Despina' because it has the status of being duplicate of this one. And I'm using Ubuntu 9.04 where some fn-keys are not working. And when I compare 9.04 to 8.10 I lost the fn+f9 (wlan on/off) what was in 8.10.

Now working: fn+volume up/down, fn+f10 (touchpad), fn+www, fn+esc (standby), fn+f6 (sound), fn+f11, fn+-, fn+*, fn++, fn+enter

The rest: no function.

Please fix this and thx in advance."
