Font size on login screen is too big with nvidia-glx-new

Bug Description

The following happens on a Dell D830 laptop with the nVidia Quadro 140:

After installing Hardy Release candidate, the login screen fonts for entering the username and password looks fine. Then, I downloaded the nvidia-glx-new package to make use of accelerated 3D. After rebooting the machine, the font in the password box is extremely big. At first, this seemed to be a duplicate of some other bugs reported here, but changing the xorg.conf did not actually help the problem. After reverting to the nv drivers and reconfiguring X, everything was back to normal.

Maybe it is worth mentioning the system 15" screen has a resolution of 1680x1050, so its probably related to the high DPI?

Hardy had all updates applied as of the time of writing.

Addition: I also checked fonts everywhere else in Ubuntu, they are all kinda big. For reference, see screenies. The first one from Firefox in Ubuntu.

the issue is a nvidia-glx-new one, xorg is likely reporting wrong dpi informations when using this driver

Thanks for your comment, but in this case, I am not so sure it is solely a nvidia-glx-new problem, because the dpi seem to be correctly detected by X:

(II) NVIDIA(0): Virtual screen size determined to be 1680 x 1050
(--) NVIDIA(0): DPI set to (129, 127); computed from "UseEdidDpi" X config

Given the facts that the screen is 15.4", the resolution 1680x1050, and the aspect ration 16:10, the following calculation can be made (yes, I know it is not elegant, but it gets to the point):

(16x)²+(10x)²=15.4²
which resolves to
x=0.8161

screen width = 16*x = 13.0592
screen height = 10*x = 8.16198

dpi(x) = 1680/13.0592 = 128.645
dpi(y) = 1050/8.16198 = 128.645

Given this result, the DPI set by X to 129,127 is pretty damn close, and should not have such a huge impact.

Hi,

Have you tried the fix proposed by bug 141001?

Here is a link to the comment detailing the fix:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/compiz/+bug/141001/comments/14

I had the same problem after upgrade of Gutsy Gibbon to Hardy Heron on a Toshiba Satellite M70-215 at login. Applying that solution and restart the PC fix the problem for me.

I use Kubuntu and my gfx card is an Intel

Thanks for the link, I fixed the problem myself by altering xorg.conf. Just in case someone does not know where to find it, its in /etc/X11/

Add the following lines to the "Device" section:

Option "UseEdidDpi" "false"
Option "DPI" "96 x 96"

Save the file, then restart the X server by pressing Ctrl+Alt+Backspace.

the same problem here on Intrepid Ibex, most recent patches applied. System is a Toshiba M200 with 1400x1050 resolution and NVidia GeForce Go5200 32M/64M. The font on the login screen is much too big for the small box. Tried the gdm.conf change to -dpi 96.

In Jaunty (9.04), we have just updated to the latest
nvidia-graphics-drivers-180 package from nVidia, version 180.44.

This package provides fixes for a large number of bugs, and we need your
assistance in testing if it fixes the issue you reported.

To do this, please do the following:

 a. Update to the 180.44 version of -nvidia using your favorite update
     method

 b. Attempt to reproduce your bug

 c. If your bug still remains, please simply reply to this email
     indicating so.

 d. If your bug is now solved, you can help us by setting your bug
     report to Fix Released:
     * In launchpad, go to your bug report
     * Click on the downward pointing arrow under Status
     * Set the Status field to 'Fix Released'
     * Comment on the change, such as, 'Verified fixed in 180.44'
     * Click 'Save Changes'

 e. If the original problem is solved but there are now other problems,
please close the original bug and open new ones for those issues.

Thank you!

I've posted a new version of the -nvidia driver to our xorg-edgers PPA,
would you mind testing it either on Jaunty or Karmic and see if it
resolves this bug?

This bug affects me on Karmic with nvidia-graphics-drivers-185 and also affected me with Jaunty. In my case I have a 720p widescreen LCD TV connected through HDMI via an amplifier. The funny thing is if I first launch the nvidia app and choose the correct resolution the display is perfect, but if I then save xorg.conf and restart x the screen fonts are too big. I have not yet had a chance to try the selected fix.

Importantly, (and admittedly this is OT for this bug report) with HDMI the default screen size on the Karmic installer makes usability during install very difficult

This bug report was filed against an old version of Ubuntu.
Can you confirm whether this is still an issue in natty?

If you don't mind, it would be very helpful if you could update the bug
report in launchpad to 'Fix Released' if it is no longer an issue for
you, or if it is still occurring under natty, please tag the bug 'natty'
so it's easier for us to track.
