Bug Description

After installing nVidia driver from the repositories via the restricted manager in 8.04, ubuntu no longer has a display. Upon completion of the boot splash, ubuntu goes to a black screen. Monitor deactivates due to lack of input. Cannot get to command line. Hard reboot required.

Booting directly to command line works fine, however 'startx' results in black screen again.

Ubuntu works fine on nv drivers, but cannot achieve native monitor resolution (1680x1050). Driver also needed for WINE.

Problem was present in 7.10 and continues in 8.04. Problem spans Ubuntu, Kubuntu, and Kubuntu KDE4.

Hardware:
AMD Athalon 64 X2 4600+
2GB ram
nVidia GeForce 7600 GT
Dual boot with windows XP, XP on drive 1, Ubuntu on Drive 3.

Cannot attach logs. Reinstall of OS after bug occurs is the only solution thus far found.

Currently running fresh install at 1250x768 with nv drivers, since installing nvidia drivers will immediately kill OS.

This is very likely a duplicate of #216630 or if not, it is not reproducible anymore.
