Yes, flash is always a possible crasher. maybe ask if he uses flash
and if uninstalling helps

Flash crashes might get better if you remove libflashsupport package
from your system.

If that doesn't help enough, you should try to use
mozilla-plugin-gnash or swfdec-mozilla - the both freesoftware
alternatives we have for adobes flash. Both should be much more
stable, but might not work for all sites - though lots of use-cases
should work.

Then open a new bug and attach the gathered information.

My mozilla doesn't crash anywhere i go, it crashes when Internet/Ethernet is down and i launch Mozilla. Instead of popping window "internet connection not available" or something, it pulls the whole system down, gradually, as you try to shut the browser down, etc, everything bogs down until it stops responding. It's so bad in fact, even after reboot it doesn't clean up all the mess and keep telling "another session of mozilla is running, you must turn it off etc."Or something to that effect.
The administrator e-mailed me that i have to first activate apport to start automatic debugging. But now i I will have to recreate the problem intentionally, it only happened accidentally, my wife unplugged my cable modem and gateway, when moving furniture around.
Right now both my vehicles are down so i can't do too much here, i have to put one of them on the road..
It's quite a job to get it going again (the computer) after the crash, i think i finally managed it in recovery mode.
thanks Mike

Felix, I already replied several times to various suggestions, I assumed these would be posted on web to be read first.
This has NOTHING TO DO with using Firefox.
This about launching, starting Firefox 3.0.1 when the Internet is down. My cable modem and router power supplies got accidentally unplugged, and Firefox proceeded to gradually bog down and crash the system.
All the while it was claiming that "another session of Firefox is already running......." which it wasn't and it wouldn't have mattered, I routinely open two sessions of Firefox, and they run fine. On my ThinkPad, at least.
This can happen to anyone who has a notebook or UPS, and power goes out just before they start Firefox.
What is scary about it, it doesn't recover even after reboot, i finally brought it up in recovery mode.
I will have to re-create the problem so it will create the crash file for automatic debugging, but i don't have time now.

My computer has 4Gb of RAM and a quad processor so there's no shortage of computing grunt. The problem appears completely random and it can even happen when I try to play an audio clip.

Well that definitely did crash my Firefox but how is that related to this bug?

I would open another thread on this issue as a new bug.

If anyone else has not caught how he accomplished that yet, that photo is actually not a PNG. Its a GIF image with the extension renamed to .png. So it is a viable GIF image (50,000 px wide by 120px high) which makes it seem that whatever mechanism Firefox uses to determine what the file's real type is is currently flawed.

Ill retry it again with a random GIF and see if its related to that particular image do to its size or not and post back.

Firefox is correctly able to load the image use the File Open dialogue as well as through an html file using the img tag.

Therefore, whatever is causing that to work is due to the data of that particular image.

Julio Lajara (ju2wheels) wrote :

@kuba, the gif extension itself is not what matters, I was merely saying that the image was a GIF image with the extension renamed. So if you download the png to your computer, then rename it to GIF, you can see the image in a picture viewer. If you dont do that then a picture viewer will most likely not display the 50,000 px image.

You can prove its a gif by dumping the first bit of the binary data on the command line running:
more test.png

In which case the first thing you should see is the GIF identifier. I think this image may have embedded code in it that causes Firefox to crash if its not related to the actual size of the image, which I would find really difficult to believe is actually the problem here.

does not crash while the tab is in background but 2-3 seconds after I bring
this tab to forground, I get small popup in bottom right corner saying:

I have Flash installed but during last crash I wasn't using it due to having everything blocked by the Flashblock add-on (v 1.3.12a1). It seems that at the time of the crash I lost my wireless and reconnected, which may have caused the crash (no idea- I just want to point out it happened at the same time). This is what I see in the syslog (and I just assume that what this means is: lost wireless and reconnected):

Thanks to whoever provided the useful reminder about the tab setting in response to the previous spleen venting.

I don' t know if this is really the same bug I'm seeing--and I don't care anymore. After several years of using Ubuntu, I am now convinced that it is going down the toilet and cannot be relied upon. This comment (which was just interrupted by ANOTHER unprovoked Firefox shutdown--at least the 3rd this hour), is just spleen venting. I'm just waiting for a better alternative or to be forced all the way back to Microsoft. I am NOT waiting for Ubuntu to get better. The trend line on Ubuntu is absolutely clear: Right down the toilet.

I guess that's enough and I may as well post this before Firefox crashes again.

I am using firefox 3.6 Not a problem but I am still on the older 9.10 unbuntu because every time I try and upgrade to 10.04 it will not boot up It is a smoother and cleaner os but I really wish they would fix the upgrade issue.
My firfox has closed a few times but remembers my tabs so nothing lost but time so far.
I have windows at work but do not care for all the intrusions I get from windows like for 1. the freezing up.
Mu ubuntu does not do this I can leave it on for weeks even month where The Windows I use needs rebooting some times 3 times a day, to just one time.

Quite obviously you have an issue with firefox (this is not under the main control of the ubuntu dev team).
It is most probably caused by a plugin you have running and nothing to do with Ubuntu at its core, disable your plugins and see if that helps then complain to who wrote the plugin.

This is a bug reporting system and if you want to rant write a blog. This is for serious software discussion.
If you have a serious bug report then please report it with a good title and information so that it can be fixed.

Ubuntu isn't really under any specific economic model.
The open source movement is about freedom of software and hardware, if you want paid support and someone you can moan at please buy windows.

I do not want to be told to go to windows and complain thats useless with the history of Microsoft not listening to people where as Ubuntu Linux has come up with something that works with a few mishaps unlike windows Ubuntu Works  .
I place an apology to those reading these comments thinking I am in the wrong. But I am ignorant to the use of this tool. I ask for education , not ridicule about  my problem and voicing it here. I understand this is not a forum or a blog now.

But thanks Danny you have made a good point I will appreciate. So how do we use this properly without My disturbances?

I have (at least twice) already used the supposedly automatic system to collect and submit the information that is supposed to diagnose these new Firefox problems. In the past, before I lost hope for Ubuntu, I also volunteered to undertake additional diagnostic measures or to run additional tests (within reason). I have seen possibly related problems in Firefox running on some of my other machines--even including one of the Windows boxen--but this particular machine is the only combination that is so utterly problematic.

At this point I'm actually getting close to retirement. Maybe I'll even do some volunteer programming when I have the time, but at several periods in my career I was a professional programmer at various levels, so I know how difficult it is to write good code. Mostly at database levels, but sometimes as low as assembly. Unfortunately, I was only a second-string programmer--but that means I appreciate the value of first-string programmers and I know that they are worth paying for. My company even provides some programmers to support open source projects--but the truth is that we are going to tend to focus our precious first-string programmers on our most important projects...

A browser that closes randomly is not very useful for serious work.

I really want viable alternatives to Windows. I believe that freedom is a good thing and that freedom depends on meaningful choice. Linux could be such a choice, but so far it has remained a minor niche product. Ubuntu once appeared to have the potential to be another viable alternative to Windows--but I obviously no longer feel that way.

I am mostly disappointed, but also frustrated and somewhat angry when one of the crashes manages to destroy something I'm attempting to do on this machine.

I'm still forced to use Microsoft products--because their ugly economic model works. You're supposed to recommend Apple as the alternative--but they are becoming more evil and more anti-freedom than Microsoft these days.

Maybe Chrome will be the option? Google has shown some cleverness in devising new economic models--though they have also shown increasing evidence of evil...

But my Firefox works fine, since i upped it to 3.6.6, it's just fine. This
is on top of the fact i don't have enough memory. I find that really
underhanded, that they don't give system requirements up front, so i was led
to upgrade to 10.04 only to find out later, it needs min. 1GB RAM. Sorry, (i
am also retiring), but to me 512MB is one hell of a lot of memory....
I only did it because since i upgraded from 8.04 up everything went wrong,
and i noticed they couldn't handle all the problems, so they rushed in a new
upgrade, but my printer still wouldn't work, and no sound etc. So i kept
upgrading to these new distros that were coming at me at a dazzling speed,
and no improvement. Now it doesn't boot, and no help, i read on the forum a
lot of seasoned users were going back to "old" (i guess it was the "good old
one") version of grub, but it was pretty kinky to do it, so i didn't bother.
I still boot in recovery mode, it takes a bit longer, but it works. Except
no sound, no printer, language support all messed up (lucky i don't need
it), Power Management has a bug in it, i didn't bother posting all these, i
figger somebody will, and if they don't, it's obviously my fault. I have
ThinkPad, so i figger if it's a general bug, somebody else gonna have to
have same problem. Like it's not a special, custom machine...
But i don't have any crash problems, even tho i have only half RAM as
recommended. Altho the nice person who answered my post, repeatedly
insinuated to check this or that, ignoring my pleas that i don't have any
crash problems, and stubbornly insisted i check my RAM, so i did, and it was
OK, i new that, i used to do hardware, and i know bad RAM poses random,
unpredictable problems. My were pretty solid and almost repeatable (firefox
crashes, mostly on BBC -- too much graphics, flash videos etc). But the new
Firefox is just fine for me, but nothing else works. No print (printer queue
setup failed -- there is several hundreds of posts on launch pad, so i
figger it would be superfluous to post another, SAME, problem. But i
remember it did work at some point, but i forget which distro it was, x-cept
USB never worked right, but the printer worked. But no it doesn't, progress,
i donno. I didn't even dare posting the USB bug. It's the CUPS, it's all
new.
I used to write some code, back in DOS / win 3.xx days. In straight C, the
C++ was just new, and I looked into it, totally new paradigm, but then
destiny moved me some where else and i could see i would never use it
again, so gave up on it.
But i would not go back to Windows, there is no way, these frustrations are
nothing compared to Winders, Gates is scam artist of our lifetime, and
everybody f-ing loves him, for ripping hundreds of BILLIONS from them, it's
outrageous. But it's not about money, it's about scam, my wife believes he
"he invented this little chip" and changed the computing world.
Well, he never invented anything in hardware dept., and he never really
learned how the hardware works, hence the whole tragi-comedy of early days
of programming.
Endless new versions of DOS (he didn't write DOS as everyone believes, he
bought it from Jim Patterson, and sold it to IBM on contract, rea...

It is, was (and will be?) the damned 'nspluginwrapper'!

For me (and certainly a lot of more people) worked this - but be warned, for 64 bit machines is no actuall package available!:
UNINSTALL the 'flashplugin' from Adobe incl. the 'nspluginwrapper', execute and look again for lost packages how can removed (I don't know if there are more dependencies?)
Look at http://get.adobe.com/de/flashplayer/otherversions/ for the *.tar.gz of the flash player, download it, extract and become :-) the "libflashplayer.so" file.
Copy this for every users extra as "root" into ~/.mozilla/plugins.
Observance: - ahead "mozilla" is a point, so this directory is hidden!
                        - if the directory "plugins" does not exists simple create it!
                        - to make the changes happen close all FF instances!
All important: Now it is on YOUR charge to update this package if bugs where fixed/a new version appears!

I still work with the old 10.0 version of the flash player cause of the ignorance from Adobe ("temporarily closed the Labs program of Flash Player 10 for 64-bit Linux") but had absolutly no crashes since I installed the flash on this way!

Please don't encourage anyone to use the 64 bit flash at this point since it is no longer receiving security updates. Also, marketing another distro on a bug tracker is in bad taste.
