Bug Description

Binary package hint: mozilla-thunderbird

Hi,

I tried to forward an e-mail I received to a colleague. The email did not have a subject line but contained text and two attachments. When I double clicked the attached forwarded mail (in the compose window) i.e. ".eml" it brings up an empty window with no text or attachments.

Are you stating the the dialog box that should tell you to add a subject is blank? Or the email became blank and attachments were removed?
Did you attempt to send anyway and if so did the colleague receive the attachments/email body? Please test if you have not already.
Can you please list any addons/themes you have installed?
I am unablet o reproduce this on POP3 account. What type of account is this? IMAP or POP3? in Thunderbird 2.0.0.14 or Thunderbird 3.0

If i forward an email the edit message windows comes up with the forwarded email as an eml-attachment. If i click on the attached eml a blank window opens and i get this error in the error console:

Fehler: uncaught exception: [Exception... "Component returned failure code: 0x80550006 [nsIMsgFolder.getMsgDatabase]" nsresult: "0x80550006 (<unknown>)" location: "JS frame :: chrome://messenger/content/messageWindow.js :: CreateView :: line 346" data: no]

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. forward an email
2. double-click the eml-attachment in the email to be forwarded

Actual Results:
blank message window

Expected Results:
The original email should be displayed

Tested it without add-ons and with a clean profile. Same result.

I can reproduce this with TB 2.0.0.16 with one (but maybe more, didn't test them all) messages but not with all.

I'm trying to find out why this email produce this problem. Its a 8bit MIME email with two eml's attached.

Hi,

I have the same problem and may give you further information you want. Ubuntu 8.10, Thunderbird 2.0.0.18

When I examine I found that this problem occurs when an inserted image exists in the forwarded message body.

Armagan

I am experiencing this exact problem using a clean installation of Thunderbird 2.0.0.19, no extensions. My steps to reproduce:

1. Send a simple message (title "test", body text "test") to myself
2. Fetch it using POP3
3. Forward it
4. Double-click the eml-attachment in the email to be forwarded.

OR

1. Create a simple message (title "test", body text "test", no recipient) and save it as a draft
2. Forward it
3. Double-click the eml-attachment in the email to be forwarded.

Actual results:
Blank message window, javascript error console shows "Fel: uncaught exception: [Exception... "Component returned failure code: 0x80550006 [nsIMsgFolder.getMsgDatabase]" nsresult: "0x80550006 (<unknown>)" location: "JS frame :: chrome://messenger/content/messageWindow.js :: CreateView :: line 346" data: no]"

Expected results:
Forwarded e-mail should be displayed in messge window

Note that I have tried reproducing this problem by forwarding IMAP and news messages, and the error has NOT occured. I have only been able to reproduce the problem using POP3 messages and drafts.

Armagan,

Thank you for taking the time to report your findings and helping to make Ubuntu better. Unfortunately, we still require some additional information.

The current Thunderbird version is '2.0.0.19+nobinonly-0ubuntu0.8.10.1'. Are you able to reproduce this on that version? If so, can you reproduce this reliably? What steps do you take to reproduce this?

Also, some previously asked questions that would be helpful to have answered:
Is the problem that the dialogue box that should tell you to add a subject is blank, or is the email blank and the attachments were removed?

Did you attempt to send anyway, and if so did the recipient receive the attachments/email body? Please test if you have not already.

Can you please list any addons/themes you have installed?

What type of account is this? IMAP or POP3? If you are able to test with both types, does this happen with both IMAP and POP3 or just one of them?

Thanks in advance!

messageWindow.js expects a msgHdr now as argument to show the attachment, so pass in the header instead of two url/uris.

Forgot to mention this on IRC, but you can use the MailUtils module's displayMessage to open the message. This has the added benefit of obeying the user's preference on where to open messages. <http://mxr.mozilla.org/comm-central/source/mail/base/modules/MailUtils.js#131>

Ah, OK. Yeah, it makes sense for the attachment to have no folder. Never mind -- you can still use MailUtils.openMessageInNewWindow if you wish :)

Using MailUtils.openMessageInNewWindow(msgHdr) works as well and simplifies the code a bit.

I also and still have this problem and it is easy to reproduce.
I have set in the preferences that a message forwarded will be attached to the new message.

I create a new message (test1) and save the message without sending.
I right click on the saved message and selected forward.
In the new message the first message is attached.
When opening the attached message there is nothing displayed.

Even more strange:
I saved the second message, closed and reopend it.
The first message was still attached but double clicking it asked me to open it with the web browser or to save it.
I saved to disk and reopened the created eml file (nsmail.eml) with thunderbird.
There was some HTML in the message (see attachment)!

Now I had to set my Thunderbird to embed and not to attach forwarded messages.
I am using Thunderbird Version 2.0.0.23 (20090817) on Ubuntu 9.04, all Updates are installed.

inline instead of attaching it

Thats what I did, I changed the settings not to attach messages.
So this error does not show up any more.
But thunderbird uis still buggy, cannot get along with attached messages and needs to be fixed.

You need to file a separate bug report for each bug. More than likely the attachment bugs will be fixed in 3.0. 2.0 is only receiving security updates. Closing bug for that reason.
