Battery monitor applet keeps showing AC power while on battery

Bug Description

Step 1: Put the laptop (in my case an Acer 1522 WMLi) on AC power and remove the
battery.
Step 2: Put the laptop into hibernation or suspend mode.
Step 3: Insert the battery and remove the AC power cable.
Step 4: Bring the laptop back to active status.

Expected result: The battery monitor applet shows the percentage or time
remaining before the battery runs out of power.

Actual result: The battery monitor applet tells me that it is running on AC
power and won't show how long I've got before the battery runs out.

Thanks for your bug report. I guess it's a duplicate of
http://bugzilla.ubuntu.com/show_bug.cgi?id=15439 - I have a patch in place which
will be uploaded to Dapper, once the archive is open again. Could you test the
packages mentioned there and see if they make things work for you again?

The problem described in that bug is very similar to mine, but unfortunately the
patches you created for that one didn't work. I only tried the i386 version, but
I will try the amd64 version once I have some more time in the weekend.

Erm? You are talking about two different machines right? (for i386 and amd64
testing) - apart from that, did you restart the box or at least the applet?

I'm sorry, I should have been clearer.
For testing the packages, I installed them all. Tried it out without changing
anything, after restarting the applet, logging out, and after a reboot. None of
these cases worked. If you have any other suggestions on what I could try I'd
like to hear them.
About testing the AMD64 versions, that will be done on the same laptop
(currently running an i386 install, but that will be changed during the weekend).
I will also try to reproduce the issue on another laptop and see if the patches
work there.

As promised, I have done more testing. The situation is the same (the original
problem and that the patch doesn't solve it) for an AMD64 installation on the
Acer laptop, and an i386 installation on an old Toshiba Tecra 8200 laptop.
If there is anything else I can do to help, please let me know.

I can confirm this issue on my Thinkpad T43.

Battery detected by acpi (/proc/acpi/battery/BAT0/state = present) if I plug it while in suspend mode but Gnome Power Manager does not show.

If I plug the battery before suspend to ram and unplug it while asleep, /proc/acpi/battery/BAT0/state still reports the battery as present.

Changing to confirmed since ther has been at least one confirmation.

Bug #33374 seems vaguely related. Not marking as a duplicate since it is not.

bug #43253 locates clearly that my version of the bug comes from HAL not refreshing

The bug is gone for me thanks to an HAL update. Is it still annoying you ?
