Bug Description

Binary package hint: firefox

Firefox 3 beta 5 in Xubuntu 8.04, extensions: adblock and forecast fox
Dell Optiplex - Celeron 433mz, 256mb ram

Attempted to drag the last item in my bookmarks menu to a new position near the top. Drag begins with a graphic of the item in animation, then immediately Firefox freezes up along with the desktop. Have to grab a console and kill Firefox or restart X.

This is not using the 'organize bookmarks' dialog, but doing a drag & drop in the actual menu. The menu is long and reaches below the bottom of the screen.

I have reproduced this crash.

Disabling extensions didn't help?

Please try to get a backtrace following the instructions here:

Thanks Alexander.

Disabling firefox extensions did not have any effect.

I am unable to complete the advised instructions due to the crash leaving me unable to regain the (gdb) prompt. After crash I ctrl-alt-F3 to a console and must kill firefox because my desktop is hung until I do that. I am probably doing this all wrong - am very new to this.

I will pursue it more if you can advise me how to proceed. I am just trying to help by reporting a bug. I am using xubuntu temporarily on an old Optiplex while my main box is in for repairs.

Hmm ... maybe not enough memory for debugging this beast? How much mem

.crash file produced in /var/crash by double clicking on it. Then our
auto retracers will try to generate the backtraces for you.

Note that an update to Firefox (3.0 non-beta) has come down since I initially filed this bug.

The bug persists. Dragging any item within the bookmarks menu in any direction produces a desktop-wide freeze.

I have enabled apport and performed the suggested 'test crash' to confirm that it works. The Firefox crash produces no report.

Can no one else reproduce this crash?

Have been unable to start firefox from the text console. It says no display is specified. I assume it is calling for the --display=??? option but I don't know how to specify that parameter and googling has not helped.

Since it's been a very long time since any additional info was added to this bug, I'm just checking to see if this is still an issue, and find out what additional work should be done on this bug.

This bug is 100% repro in Firefox 3.0.7 / Intrepid. The repro steps are as follows:

1. Move mouse to bookmarks bar.
2. Press mouse button and release.
3. Move mouse to an item in the bar.
4. Click and drag.

Result:
Firefox freezes 100% of the time with the mouse pointer grabbed, requiring a console (or zap mode + ctrl-alt-kp/)

Expected result:
Firefox works.

Attached is a GDB log session for Firefox after it freezes. It was marginally more difficult to get it to freeze while running
firefox in GDB: I had to wiggle the mouse more. It may have taken 20 seconds.

Sadly, this log session has little useful data in it since Firefox's libraries seem to have practically no symbols, but perhaps it's useful to somebody.

For reference, if someone else wants to reproduce this, you need to run firefox in GDB from either the console or another computer, since this bug will freeze your X11 session, preventing you from, say, using GDB. In either case, you would do this:

1. Go to console/other computer and log into your debug computer.
2. export DISPLAY=:0
3. firefox -g
4. "run"
5. Go back to X11, if you were on the console
6. Repro bug
7
. Go back to console/other computer
8. "ctrl-c" to break into debugger

Xubuntu 9.04, Firefox 3.0.16 here with same problem, and:

- Starting Firefox with clean profile REMOVES the problem

- Disabling all plugins DOES NOT remove the problem

- Deleting places.sqlite DOES NOT remove the problem

SO:

Please start Firefox from the command line with "firefox -ProfileManager", create and use a new profile and see if the problem persists.

Sorry but all that did was remove all my favourites. Put favourites back
and same crash when trying to move an entry up the Bookmarks list.

This problem does not occur for me if I move a bookmark entry that is
normally visible on screen.

This problem does occur for me if I have to scroll down the bookmarks
menu then try to move an entry up the list.

This problem does occur with both single entries and entry groups.

I confirm what Neil has observed in my Samsung NC20 netbook / Ubuntu 9.04 / Mozilla 3.0.16. I did not try the profile manager option. The problem occurs when I try to move an item from below the list (beyond the screen and I need to scroll down there to get it). I tried to move it up and system freezed (Ctrl+Alt+Fx did not get me a console). I had to reboot. If I do not have to scroll down, i.e. if my bookmarks list is small and within the screen, I do not have any problem moving items around as Neil also reported. I see some freeze-ups related to openchrome which are tracked in bug 374090 (link below) . Could you guys confirm if you are using openchrome (graphics driver for VIA chipsets) please?

Hi,
it's long after the initial report but I'm having the same issue with firefox 14.0.1. (dunno if it's a regression or if this problem wasn't fixed before, can't find a similar bugreport on launchpad)

* This is a clean install of ubuntu 12.04, fully updated with the default supplied firefox.
* I imported my bookmarks from chrome, (show all bookmarks - import - import from another browser)
* Again I use the bookmark manager to sort some bookmarks, select a whole bunch and when i drag them to a different directory the desktop freezes.
* Only way out = log in on other tty and restart desktop

I reproduced this error on my laptop which also runs ubuntu 12.04, I had no bookmarks so I created some quickly. Dragging more bookmarks decreases the time to freezen, with 1 I have to shake around for some time, grab 40 bookmarks and I'm not able to drag them a centimeter.

I'm at work atm so no time to create a crashdump, I'll try to get one and attach it over the weekend + do some experimentation.
