Driver manager doesn't detect correct drivers for 8800M

Bug Description

My Gateway P-6860FX laptop has an 8800M GTS video card. Ubuntu's driver manager did not install the correct drivers, so I got the drivers from nvidia.com/object/unix.html and ran their installation. That install is correct.

Furthermore, the driver manager kept overwriting my custom xorg, I believe, so I had to uninstall jockey to keep my xorg from breaking.

You don't need to uninstall, just don't use jockey to configure your xorg.conf then (it only changes it when you enable/disable a driver).

Please copy&paste the output of these two commands (from a Terminal window):

  lspci |grep VGA
  lspci -n|grep VGA
