Manual tweaking needed to support a resolution of 1920x1200

Bug Description

When I first installed hoary, it correctly identified the native resolution of
my Hewlett-Packard f2304 monitor as 1920x1200, at least when I used the
proprietary nvidia driver. The adapter I use is a NVIDIA GeForce 6800 GT.

When I upgraded (using Synaptic) to Breezy that resolution was unavailable until
I manually created and added the modeline:

  Modeline "1920x1200" 154.00 1920 1968 2000 2080 1200 1203 1209 1235 # 154
MHz, 74.04 kHz, 60.0 Hz

to my /etc/X11/xorg.conf. The modeline is handcrafted from the corresponding
timings in the Windows driver.

I would suggest this is a usability bug.

Hi Frederik,

i am in the process of reviewing very old bugs. do you happen to know if this has been fixed in most recent versions of Ubuntu?

Thanks
Fabio

Fabio,

No. I tried the nv driver just a few days ago, as the binary nvidia driver
broke on the last kernel upgrade (my bad, not yours). The nv driver is still
limited to 1280x1024 on my system.

I suspect this bug to be somewhat related to X.org Bug 5386 - EDID mode
injection <https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=5386>, but I have
not tried any of the patch suggestions related to that bug.

Thanks for following up on my report, and sorry for my slow response.

Fredrik.

Sorry, I commented on the wrong bug report. Will test again and report back.

I removed the hand-made Modeline, and the nvidia driver still works in
1920x1200 mode as expected. I have not tested the entire upgrade path again,
but as a standard xorg.conf now works as expected I don't think I need to.

Comment #4 is related to bug #24861, which is still open. Sorry for the
confusion.

I consider this bug fixed for me.

Thanks.
Fredrik.
