I had this with totem G-streamer, probably by setting resolution too high. Card was not detected, I had to configure manually or go for low graphics mode.

I get this bug too in 8.10 Xubuntu, installed using alternate installer. It was the daily build from 31/08/08, with all updates. It seems to crash soon after login.

This found in Intrepid Alpha 5 AMD64 bit Kernel 2.6.27-2-generic while trying to install nVidia restricted drivers for nVidia Geoforce 7600 GS card. On initial attempt to install, Unable to report message displayed (see attachment) and software backport updates not enabled. These were enabled and the PC rebooted before getting the current jockey error.

The indicated error in the jockey-<frontend> seems to be caused by jockey-backend script not finishing it's initialization stage, thus doesn't respond to frontend requests.

The jockey-backend script appears to be hanging in jockey.detection._get_printers(), while waiting on cups.Connection().getDevices(). In fact, the cupsd process goes to 100% CPU usage ocasionally and needs restart, so the real problem is probably in the cups/cups-client and jockey fails as a side-effect.

Forcing _get_printers() to return an empty set immediately after docstring works for me as a workaround for this issue.

I experienced the same doing an apt-get upgrade from CLI on Xubuntu Intrepid with kernel 2.6.27-2-generic.
Unlike the previous poster I already had CUPS running.
