Does not appear to have been acked by a member of ubuntu-universe-sponsors; unsubscribing ubuntu-archive and setting back to 'new'.

Please see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SyncRequestProcess for explanation of this procedure.

Hi Steve! Yeah, I read that page. I used the requestsync tool described on that page to create this report. It seems to be fairly buggy ;-) Thanks for subscribing ubuntu-universe sponsors.

FWIW, I've got this package building in a PPA here: http://launchpad.net/ubunet-hackers/+archive, I had to move python-support from Build-Depends-Indep to Build-Depends in order to get amd64 and lpia builds to succeed in the PPA.

Anything else that I can do to help with this? I like helping.

I'd like to get this into main rather than universe. What's the process for doing that?

Steve, why is it important to you for this to be in main?

This looks reasonable enough, and has my ack for addition.

@mdz: The online services team at Canonical is using this library. For packages in main "Security updates are provided for them as necessary by Canonical". I would like Canonical to provide security updates for this package.

Let's take this part of the conversation out of the bug. This is a sync
request to get python-protobuf into Ubuntu (universe) and is closed now.

Looking at the requirements for inclusion in Main, I don't see that that fits:

Rationale: There must be a certain level of demand for the package, for
example:
The package is useful for a large part of our user base.
The package is a new build dependency or dependency of a package that we
 already support.
The package replaces another package we currently support and promises higher
quality and/or better features, so that we can drop the old package from the
 supported set.

Packages in Universe receive community support and security updates. I'd
welcome the online services team at Canonical to be part of that community.

Unsubscribing motu-release since the decision to add the package post-freeze has already been taken.
