Bug Description

Binary package hint: firefox

If I from Firefox visit for example http://streaming.streamoco.se/?page=player&pid=877&cid=2208&caid=54&rcaid=0&hideTop=0&hideRight=0&hideAd=0&tid=2&sid=17 I at first get a popup showing that I need addition plugins to view media on the page.

I press Install missing plugins but just get info about no suitable plugins found. This could be done better, you could perhaps get a hint as to what media this concerns. At this point I have no clue to why I cannot play this video clip.

Maybe the plugin finder in Totem should trigger and ask if you want to install additional codecs?

Thank you for your bugreport. Since this seems to be an issue with
version 3 of the firefox browser, I'm reassigning the package.

Vladimir: Hade you tried with a fresh install of Intrepid? I think you have some customized settings which makes it work. If you go to that page with a fresh install you will get a top-bar that informs you that 'Additional plugins are required to display all the media on this page". The plugin finder service will then fail.

is this about the plugin finder? if thats the case replace "8.04" with 8.10 in about:config -> pfs.database.url and try again.

Well, I guess it's first that it doesn't play automagically and then also that the pluginfinder doesn't give you any clue as to what you need to get it working.

You just get "No suitable plugins were found" and also a kind of unhelpful url which points to https://addons.mozilla.org/sv-SE/firefox/browse/type:7 (gives you lot's of alternatives but no clue to which one you need).

This seems to be a bit different now compared to Intrepid beta. I ran firefox from command line and noticed that I currently had the vlc plugin instead of totem. Uninstalled it and installed totem-mozilla. Now when I got to that site it doesn't complain. However, it doesn't work either but that's a completely different matter. That is bug #265017.

For this particular issue this bug could be closed but the problem with Plugin Finder Service is still there, when it doesn't find anything to suggest it doesn't give you any clue as to what you need.

have you tried the 8.10 trick i mentioned above?

Yes, that didn't help when I had the vlc-mozilla plugin installed. It didn't find anything.

Now when I go there I don't get anything about missing plugins, just that it doesn't work.

VLC is normally a workaround but not right now in Intrepid because of bug #275980.

in intrepid with ubufox if you are on a website that uses a plugin you should see a white plugin log in the status bar. also there is a menu item in tools -> manage content plugins. you can go there and search and install alternatives. also you can switch what to use for which content type on the fly.
