cups-pdf broken after upgrade to Breezy

Bug Description

After I recently upgraded to Breezy, the cups-pdf printer doesn't work anymore. I checked and changed again the cupsd.conf file ("RunAsUser No") and restartet cupsys. However I never seem to get any output.

The symptoms however vary slightly with different attempts:
First, the formerly installed PDF-printer did not work at all and couldn't be started properly.
Then I removed that printer and configured a new PDF-Printer. This led to a constant 100% CPU load for indefinite time (top showed ~90% CPU usage of cupsys).
I reinstalled cupsys and cups-pdf and newly configured a PDF-printer (also checking again cupsd.conf). Everything looks fine, when I try to print, but I get no output whatsoever (tried printing from different apps). Below I post the relevant output of /var/log/cups/error_log (in debug-level).

Has anybody experienced similar problems after the upgrade to Breezy? Did I miss anything? Thanks for any suggestion.

Just tried it. I restarted cups after putting RunAsUser No and after printing I got .pdf in my home directory. No CPU load, but .pdf is unreadable.

for the cups-pdf device driver, try using Generic -> PostScript Printer as opposed to Generic -> postscript color printer (rev3) as is recommended by the package docs.

after you have that driver setup, go into Properties -> Advanced and set GhostScript pre-filtering to something. in my case, any pre-filtering option produces readable output but I personally use Convert to PS level 2.

I have the same problem, but even with Generic
->postscript color printer (rev3) all is OK when I log in as root, I got nice *.pdf in the /root directory. But as a user the printer is stopped and no way to print. (I set in cupsd.conf the "RunAsUser No")
Other printers work well as user. And I work in Breezy for a long time already, and all was OK with the PDF printing until the automatic update online yesterday....

Looking at other bugs for this package, I suspect that this is caused by the recent change in user privilege handling in CUPS.

Can you try the following from a terminal:

sudo chmod +s /usr/lib/cups/backend/cups-pdf

Then restart CUPS.

Does this fix it for you?

cups-pdf 2.4.1-2, which incorporates the above fix, was just uploaded to Edgy (Ubuntu 6.10).

As reported in bug 42147, cups-pdf 2.4.2-1 finally closed the issue for a number of people. Does it also work in your case?

After discussing with team MOTU and comparing with similar bugs, we came to the conclusion that the the version in Edgy fixes this. Closing the bug.
