Bug Description

Binary package hint: k3b

Distro: Kubuntu Hardy.

Upgrading k3b from (1.0.4-2ubuntu4) to (1.0.5-1ubuntu4~hardy1) causes the package "libk3b2-extracodecs" to be removed, instead of being upgraded to "libk3b3-extracodecs".

As suspected, this prevents k3b from handling codecs it could handle before the update, giving the following error-message:
"Unable to handle the following files due to an unsupported format"

Workaround:
- install "libk3b3-extracodecs" manually.

Seems trivial, but might be a show-stopper for regular users.

"regular" users don't have hardy-backports activated.

I wouldn't be too sure of that, because "regular" users probably got their computer installed by a "non-regular" user. :)
However, it would also be nice to avoid possible hazzle for skilled users - especially breaking something that used to work previously.

This error is very likely to go unnoticed until someone wants to burn a CD and is in a hurry.

Are the backports repositories "supported"? If so, this dependency should be fixed.

Besides, who is to say what "regular" users will have? Perhaps someone was told, or discovered how, to add the repository? After all, adding that one is quite easy (it's right there in the repo administration applet). Also, define "regular" user...

You see, that's a very tenuous argument to go on.

Anyways. I'm confirming that I see this on the amd64 arch as well, I assume the original reporter was i386?

That said, I have no idea how one would fix this, short of abstaining from putting a version number as part of the package name?

I probably don't either. Unassigning from this bug.
