Bug Description

I previously reported this as bug 27356 but have some more information. I have localized it to kernel 2.6.15. No
current version of Dapper will install on my system but Breezy, using kernel 2.6.12 will.

Here again are the boot messages:
hde: WDC WD 800JB-00FMA0, ATA DISK drive
ide2: I/O resource 0xB402-0xB402 not free.
hde: ERROR, PORTS ALREADY IN USE

ide3: I/O resource 0xA802-0xA802 not free
ide3: ports already in use, skipping probe

This fails with 2.6.15 whether I try to boot from an install CD or after a dist-upgrade via apt/Synaptic.

Thanks,
Alan Claunch

I have the same problem with hard drives attached to an on-board HPT370 IDE controller. Same type of errors
about I/O ports. This problem occurs with all the kernels since 2.6.15-7, I was able to boot with 2.6.15-6.
I'm not sure this is a kernel issue, maybe it's a initramfs or udev problem.

(Please could you change your summary with something more explicit, like "Kernel 2.6.15-9 won't boot on
promise or hpt ide controller", thanks)

Could you try updating today and see whether this is still causing a problem

I just did apt-get update/apt-get dist-upgrade and then rebooted. Kernel 2.6.15-15 still gives the same errors, but 2.6.15-14 booted fine.

Was a kernel bug ... as noted, has been fixed in recent kernels.
