e.g.
https://edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/intrepid/i386/libquicktime1/2:1.0.2+debian-2build2

lists as dependency: libavcodec51 (>= 3:0.svn20080206-8)

this is incorrect. dpkg-deb on the downloaded file lists this: libavcodec51 (>= 3:0.svn20080206-8) | libavcodec-unstripped-51 (>= 3:0.svn20080206-8)

Right, the code that parses dependencies doesn't support | (OR).

We do /support/ alternate dependencies, apparently this is a webapp limitation that is annoying but not functional. Low for now.
