Bug Description

Binary package hint: konqueror-kde4

The shortcut in the sidebar opens an error message. ('Persönlicher Ordner' means home directory in German).
See attached screenshot. Happened after clicking on 'Persönlicher Ordner' (with the blue background).
Should open the home dir.
Version info:
felix@T60:~$ apt-cache policy konqueror

This has been reported before, as Bug #152660 and Bug #153229, but still remains!

Using Kubuntu 4.1.1 and the Home sidebar entry still goes to $HOME and can't find it.

In those other bugs it seems the problem goes away somehow. I can't reproduce in Kubuntu 4.1.1. But since it surfaces every now and then, it must be some specific setting somewhere.

I've checked some config files, and the one that could mean problems in that area is this file ( I think, I'm not an expert ):

- .kde4/share/apps/konqsidebartng/webbrowsing/entries/home.desktop
the first 3 lines say where the home folder goes, could you tell me your values for those lines?

Also, you could backup your konqueror related files in .kde4/share/apps and .kde4/share/config, remove them and see if the problem goes away.

I'm guessing this is an upgrade from Hardy?

Hello.

Please attach the following file to this bug report
$HOME/.kde/share/apps/konqsidebartng/webbrowsing/entries

As Jonathan suggested this probably is an incompability between KDE 3 and KDE 4, I am not sure what we can do about it. But maybe that file brings some light into the darkness.

Thank you.

Hi.
Meanwhile I discarded my old system and did a clean install of kubuntu 8.10, because of many many minor annoyances. In this process I also removed my .kde directory to clean the configuration. This solved the problem for me.
The file you refer to is a directory. I attached a tarball of it.
However, as this is resolved for me I wouldn't mind if you closed this bug to focus your efforts on other bugs.
Thanks anyway.
Felix

Thank you Felix.

It appears that the sidebar creates a user copy of it's desktop files, which has the disadvantage that it doesn't know about the changed URL in KDE 4.
While in KDE 3 the URL file:$HOME worked perfectly fine, in KDE 4 it is necessary to use ~ as URL. Ultimately the sidebar would have some way to correct the old URL, so this really should be reported to KDE as well. Another solution would be to make the the file:// protocol support the old $HOME and just redirect it to the proper destination.

Felix, if you have time, it would be very nice if you could file an accompanying in the KDE bug tracker at http://bugs.kde.org (I suppose konqsidebar has an own product entry, otherwise it would probably be part of konqueror) and post its URL here. Otherwise someone from the team will forward the report ... at some point ... hopefully ;-)

Have a nice day.

We have a downstream bug about this: https://launchpad.net/bugs/281019
It seems to be a KDE3 -> KDE4 upgrade bug.

This comment seems to describe the cause of the bug well: https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/kdebase/+bug/281019/comments/6

It's a valid KDE3 -> KDE4 upgrade bug. KDE just doesn't handle the upgrade at all.

Hi there!

Thanks for reporting this bug! Your bug seems to be a problem with the KDE program itself, and not with our KDE packages. But don't worry! This issue is being tracked by the KDE developers at: http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=171773
Once fixed in KDE, it will be included in Kubuntu once the KDE version the fix is in in reaches Kubuntu.

Thanks!

As a workaround I used to delete the old $HOME/.kde/share/apps/konqsidebartng folders when upgrading machines to KDE4. Konqueror recreates this directory when next run and I believe it just holds sidebar settings as per its name - not, for example, bookmarks. As well as clearing out the old URLs it also clears out the defunct icon names.

There hasn't been any activity on this issue for some time. Please check if this issue is still valid for Konqueror 4.8.4 or later.
