Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-system-tools

My current Ubuntu release:
Description: Ubuntu 8.04.1
Release: 8.04

Current Package Version:
gnome-system-tools:
  Installed: 2.22.0-0ubuntu9
  Candidate: 2.22.0-0ubuntu9
  Version table:
 *** 2.22.0-0ubuntu9 0
        500 http://de.archive.ubuntu.com hardy/main Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

Additional Search Domain Names in gnome network settings do not work after reboot, because a "comma(,)" is inserted after each search domain.

Steps to reproduce:

1. System->Administration->Network
2. Unlock the settings
3. Select DNS tab
4. Click "add" adjacent to search domains
5. Fill in field
6. Click close
7. ping a short name > works
8. goto /etc/resolv.conf
9. Domain search names listed in the following format:
search domain.dom enterprise.dom local.dom

10. Reboot
11. Open System->Administration->Network
12. Go to DNS tab
13. Search domains appear correctly.
14. ping a short name > doesn´t work
15. go to /etc/resolv.conf
16. Domain search names are now listed in the following format:
search domain.dom, enterprise.dom, local.dom

17. remove the added commas between the search domains and save file.
18. ping a short name > works.

Just Upgraded from Gutsy to Intrepid and finally to JJ. This is still happening on JJ 9.04. Will anyone ever take a look at this bug??

The search domains are received via MS DHCP.

Harald

I think this might be addressed with a patch to /sbin/dhclient-script (provided by dhcp3-client) to remove the commas.

Not sure whether http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc3397.txt is relevant or not

The document explains which DHCP option is used to define search domains, as well as the possible vulnerabilities.

The problem I am experiencing on Jaunty is that I receive 3 search domains from my MS DHCP Server which, when included in the /etc/resolv.conf file, are separated by commas, which make it unreadable for the OS.

Here my package up-to-date information for the bug:

My Ubuntu Release:
Description: Ubuntu 9.04
Release: 9.04

gnome-system-tools release:

gnome-system-tools:

Bug #288052 reported by Harald on 2008-10-23 <--- Bummer. It's been more than a year since I reported this bug. I still have to edit /etc/resolv.conf every morning before I can start browsing my domain.

Sorry, but I don't think the report was filed against the right package. Sadly, you chose the gnome-system-tools, which were not maintained since then. We should find the real culprit of the bug.

If I understand correctly the description, every reboot breaks /etc/resolv.conf? So actually network-admin is not breaking things: what are you using it for? Do you get the problem on every reboot, or on every reconnexion?

Changed in gnome-system-tools (Ubuntu):
status: New → Incomplete
importance: Undecided → Medium

I checked what exactly is breaking things:

I'm not using the network manager, so I disconnected with ifdown; after ifup, my search domain list contained comma's again.
So it is not just rebooting but every reconnection that is breaking things.

If you configure your DHCP to deliver multiple search domains (option 15 on MS DHCP), then, after each ifdown-ifup/reboot/disconnect-reconnect using nm, you get the commas between the search domains on /etc/resolv.conf. I have 3 ubuntu 9.10 at home and 1 9.10 at work; all show the same behavior.

Thanks. So that's a bug with dhclient, I hope somebody more aware of its behavior will be able to help.

affects: gnome-system-tools (Ubuntu) → dhcp3 (Ubuntu)

I'm beginning to get a sick feeling when reporting bugs.

I've been reporting bugs for 2 years now, and none of the reported issues have been implemented/fixed. Some have even been ignored (evolution-bugzilla).

Every morning, for 2 years I have to double-click on a rpl script to remove the commas of /etc/resolv.conf. I've been patient. I've delivered all info... is this issue ever going to be fixed?
