"Add a torrent" file dialog unusable

Bug Description

Binary package hint: transmission-gtk

Ubuntu release:
8.10 (Intrepid Ibex)

Package version:
1.34-0ubuntu2

Expected:
Click on "Add a torrent" or using "Torrent -> Add" should open a usable window for adding ".torrent" files

Deviation:
Using option to add a torrent produces a very small window which can't be resized correctly (window gets resized, but the content does not); it is not possible to navigate and choose a file; so far, I've added them using drag and drop

Other information:
Version 1.34 used to work just fine on 8.04; when installing 8.10, settings were kept in my home folder. Is it possible to have some incompatibilities there?
I do not run Compiz; problem with incorrect resizing also shows up when using "Torrent details" option (it resizes only the window, without the content)

Hello,

Not really; I think it is not a problem of transmission but a problem of
the video driver.

Thanks for your time, anyway

This is possibly an old gtk bug that may have been fixed (I haven't seen
it for a while). Does the problem still exist for you with Ubuntu
Jaunty?

I was suffering from what I think is the same problem with interpid 8.10, but followed the advice here to get the latest version of Transmission:

http://forum.transmissionbt.com/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=5604

First edit the config file with a command like this:

gksudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

Then add the appropriate lines (here 'intrepid' = 8.10 version etc) to the end of the file:

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/transmissionbt/ubuntu intrepid main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/transmissionbt/ubuntu intrepid main

Save file then exit editor. Then add the keys with these two commands:

gpg --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com --recv 976b5901365c5ca1
gpg --export --armor 976b5901365c5ca1 | sudo apt-key add -

Then start the System -> Administration -> Software sources and I un-ticked the new entry in Third Party Software for the transmission source (did not need it anyway) then on 'Close' it updated the package lists and then the orange star appears (top task-bar right hand side) with the option to update the version of the Transmission BitTorrent client. That now seems to work fine.

I also edited the basic settings to make it more friendly to my ISP's <cough> "fair use" policy by configuring as follows Edit -> Preferances:

Torrents (change to dedicated directory, not Desktop, for output)
Peers (enable block list, change to "encryption required")
Speed (enable speed limit mode 8:30 to 21:00 with down=20k & up = 15k)
Network (incomming post checked / enabled in router for forwarding)

Hope this helps.

I'm not sure what to do with this ticket now:

The OP thinks it's a video driver problem, rather than a Transmission one, but is using Vista now, so can't test

Hew thinks it may be an old GTK+ bug that's fixed now

Paul was experiencing it in 8.10, but upgrading to a newer Transmission build has cleared it up.

Marking as invalid as per the suggestion of #ubuntu-bugs. Neither of the two people who reported experiencing this are able to test anymore, since they're moved on to Vista or a newer version of Transmission that doesn't exhibit the behavior.

Please reopen it if you can give us the missing information, and don't hesitate to submit bug reports in the future. To reopen the bug report you can click on the current status, under the Status column, and change the Status back to "New". Thanks again!
