Bug Description

Binary package hint: virtualbox-ose-guest-utils

I've seen bug report #262990 where on intrepid, virtualbox-ose-guest-utils conflicts with xserver-xorg-core and cannot be installed without uninstalling xserver-xorg. I have the same problem with (X)ubuntu jaunty (fully updated) where the virtualbox-ose-guest-utils package is version 2.0.4-dfsg-0ubuntu3 and the kernel is 2.6.28-4-generic. xserver-xorg-core version is 2:1.5.99.3-0ubuntu3, which is higher than the supposedly conflicting versions of xserver-xorg-core < 2:1.4.

Cheers,
Robert

I can confirm this, it makes testing Jaunty in Virtualbox really difficult.

The specific detail on this is that vbox-guest-utils provides xserver-xorg-input-2.1, whereas xserver-xorg-core conflicts with xserver-xorg-input-2.1.

It seems this version of virtualbox doesn't provide support for modules that work with Xorg 7.4 (and neither does current svn checkout)

I also had this problem, but I did the following:

1. Upgraded my host VirtualBox to the non-free version 2.1.2 from virtualbox.org (previously I was running 2.0.4-dfsg-0ubuntu1)

2. Used the "Install Guest Additions" command on the Devices menu (this didn't work for me before the upgrade)

3. Installed the Linux amd64 guest tools from the ISO

4. Rebooted the guest and everything worked

Luke, thanks for your solution, but that's beyond the point. The bug in the virtualbox-ose-guest-utils package has to be fixed for those who use virtualbox-ose.

Someone the permissions should set the importance.

I can verify that this affects me too.

Running Virtualbox-2.1 (actually, 2.1.4), Jaunty Alpha 6.

I mounted the guest additions ISO through the VirtualBox Devices Menu (instead of clicking Machine -> Install Guest Additions). As a result, Jaunty would not boot into high-graphics mode.

Currently trying Luke's suggestion.

I can also confirm that the VirtualBox guest utilities mess with and delete the Xorg.conf file. As the user above, I also boot into low graphics mode upon rebooting the machine after the Guest Additions install. I noticed when reviewing the Xserver log file that the "vboxvideo module failed to load" (paraphrasing) and that there are "no drivers available"

I can confirm this behaviour with Virtualbox 2.1.4 and AMD64 Ubuntu alpha-6

Same here.

Ubuntu Jaunty Alpha 5, with all upgrades.

VirtualBox OSE 2.1.4.

aptitude why-not virtualbox-ose-guest-utils
i xserver-xorg Depends xserver-xorg-core (>= 2:1.5.99.901)
i A xserver-xorg-core Conflicts xserver-xorg-input-2.1
p virtualbox-ose-guest-utils Provides xserver-xorg-input-2.1

I wonder if any developer is looking into this issue already.
