Bug Description

Rational:

The current version in Jaunty is very old, in view of the progress that has been made upstream the last months. Upstream has stated that this is quite important for them, as 0.5.9 (currently in Jaunty) was quite buggy and lacked a lot of important features. As this package is in main and will be officially supported by Canonical, keeping closer to both upstream and Debian will be helpful for backporting bug fixes ect.

I have built, installed, and used this under Jaunty. Build logs are available in the comments for elisa and all related plugin packages.

Other packages that need to be synced as part of transition:

pigment (0.3.14-1) - Please see Bug #331159
pigment-python (0.3.10-1) - Please see Bug #331162

Debian Changes:

elisa (0.5.28-1) experimental; urgency=low

   * New upstream release.
   * Added debian/patches/01_elisa-man1.patch to update the quite obsoleted
     man-page shipped with the release.
   * The NEWS.Debian file is only relevant for the elisa package, not
     python-elisa.
   * debian/rules:
     - Make sure that elisa depends on python-elisa with exactly the same
       source version. It will not start otherwise!

 -- Paul van Tilburg <email address hidden> Mon, 16 Feb 2009 18:06:16 +0100

elisa (0.5.27-1) experimental; urgency=low

   * New upstream release (closes: #515208).
   * Added a missing suggest on python-simplejson;
     this is used for the plugin/update system when enabled.
   * Added debian/patches/00_disable-plugin-updates.patch.
   * Added debian/NEWS to explain about the disabled (plugin) update system.
   * debian/rules:
     - No longer drop elisa/extern/coherence, it is a modified copy that
       is needed by a lot of plugins.

 -- Paul van Tilburg <email address hidden> Sun, 15 Feb 2009 14:50:31 +0100

 elisa (0.5.25-1) experimental; urgency=low

   [ Sjoerd Simons ]
   * Update python-pgm build-depend, remove python-dateutil dependency.

   [ Paul van Tilburg ]
   * New upstream release (closes: #499853, #491728, #507358).
   * debian/control:
     - Added myself as an uploader.
     - Removed legacy Conflict/Breaks: elisa-core.
     - Bumped the python-pgm depend to >= 0.3.9.
   * debian/elisa.install:
     - The elisa program is no longer located in bin/ in upstream, install
       it from debian/tmp.
     - Install shared data also from debian/tmp to be more consistent.

The current version in Jaunty is really old, in view of the progress that have been made upstream the last months. The packaging is done (see https://launchpad.net/~elisa-developers/+archive), it just needs the "official" stamp on it. Personally I am using the PPA builds and have much less problems than when using the official 0.5.9 version.

Didn't realize this is in main, not universe. Even more reason to get this updated if Canonical is going to officially support it.

I think there is good reason for a freeze exception if this doesn't make it in by feature freeze.

It would be nicer to have it in main, as -ugly provides plugins for services such as youtube, picasa, flickr and last.fm which would be very nice to have available in elisa without having to install a separate package. Most people will never find out they have to do that.

While I agree that it would be better, do you think that it is
feasible at this point in the development cycle? The biggest issue is
the gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad Recommends for -ugly which pulls in a
lot of other stuff. My quick count show 15 packages besides -ugly that
would need MIRs.

I've never done a MIR before, but I would be willing to do some of
them if others wanted to work on this in a coordinated manner.
Although, my main goal right now is to see elisa updated in jaunty as
soon as possible. Perhaps promoting -ugly is something better left for
jaunty+1 (karmic).

I don't have the technical knowledge or time to do all that either. An other option might be to demote elisa to universe. That might sound strange at first, but it makes it possible to have -ugly as recommends. That way users are provided with a much better experience and we have no differences with debian so it can be easily synced. Rationale for the main inclusion was that "we like to support it", but it is still a community effort at the moment so there is not much added value of having it in main.

I tend to agree, it's currently not very well supported anyway, and the user experience with that main/universe split is not optimal.

I subscribed Scott, since he originally requested elisa to go into main (bug 186647).

OK, I got confirmation from Loic Minier that we do not actually need elisa in main any more (was intended for mobile, and not being used). I demoted elisa* and pigment to universe.

The FFE looks appropriate to me, this wasn't really maintained in Jaunty and urgently needs an update.
