Bug Description

I have been trying to test Jaunty on an iMac since Alpha 4. Now with alpha 5, the same problems persist. I had 32-bit Intrepid installed fine.

Trying to install Jaunty, i have used a separate partition, usb stick, and live CD's. I tried both 32-bit and 64-bit Ubuntu.

64-bit doesn't seem to detect the keyboard (can't select language, etc), but both boot as far as loading the mouse cursor, playing the start up sound, and then the mouse cursor turns into the spinning thing and freezes. The rest of the screen is black.

It sounds to me as if this is a lower-level problem than the installer; for example, if the mouse freezes, that's not something that an ordinary userspace application could typically cause. I'm going to reassign this rather speculatively to X, but it could be a kernel problem too, or something else; I don't know for sure.

I forgot to mention-- i tried the 64-bit CD in an intal iBook as well. Didn't get anywhere. Just showed a "_" in the top left hand corner. Never showed boot options like language etc.

When reporting X bugs, you need to attach the output of `lspci -vvnn`, and attach your /var/log/Xorg.0.log file from after reproducing this issue. If you've made any customizations to your /etc/X11/xorg.conf please attach that as well.

I agree with colin this may really be a kernel bug, so if there are no obvious error messages in your Xorg.0.log, you should also look at your kernel log files. As currently written, this bug report cannot be troubleshot due to its incompleteness.

How can i attach the output of that when it won't boot?

I'll try again with the new alpha

Danny, what's the exact model of imac? We still need the lspci -vvnn output, but knowing the model will at least let me classify which chipset you're likely running.
