Bug Description

Binary package hint: compiz

I have two applications in the widget layer, Gajim (Jabber client) and Evolution (mail client). When I interact with the applications in certain specific ways the widget layer disappears, which makes it really difficult to use apps in the widget layer.

For instance, if I click once on the title bar (top) of either Gajim or Evolution, the widget layer disappears. If I right-click on one of my contacts in Gajim or one of my emails in Evolution the widget layer disappears. Notifications also cause the widget layer to close (see https://lists.launchpad.net/dx-team/msg00942.html).

I've tried turing "End Widget Mode on Click" off, but all that does is prevent the widget layer from closing when I click somewhere other than on one of my widget applications, it doesn't seem to affect the behavior I've described above.

If you need anything else from me, please let me know.

I can confirm this in jaunty. It occurs for me when interacting with screenlets, which are set to run as widgets. Specifically, it happens each time something is clicked in the "calculator" widget, rendering it pretty much useless.

I've just upgraded to jaunty and I am getting similar behaviour when using audacious on the widget layer. I can reproduce the effect by trying to bring up the audacious preferences window. The preferences window appears, but the widget layer deactivates and the rest of the app windows disappear with it.

I also have the problem described above however I'd also like to report another effect which is presumably related. The widget layer closes when notification popups close. This is repeatable by

sleep 10; notify-send -u normal -t 5000 hi test

And activate the widget layer within 10 seconds. When the popup closes (not opens) the widget layer closes too.

I just noticed, it also happens when tooltips close. Ie, if evolution is on your widget layer hover over one of the buttons until the tooltip pops up and then move the mouse away. When the tooltip closes the widget layer closes.

I don't know if the notifications/tooltips are really the same bug, that is reported in bug 346467. It is suspicious that they cause the same behavior.

I have tested this with a pristine (non-patched from upstream) compiz, and couldn't reproduce this behavior. However the widget layer didn't work at all.

I confirm this, even with the "End Widget Mode on Click" turned off, when you move for example a widget, the widget layer goes out

I am also having this problem. The widget layer will also disappear if I mouse over the Window List or the Gnome-Do Docky, even if there is nothing open on the widget layer.

It appears to be caused by the closing of tooltips as well as closing the notifications.

It also happens when just trying to move a screenlet window (button1+hold+drag+release)

Until Ubuntu release an official fixed package, I'm building a patched version of compiz-fusion-plugins-extra in my testing ppa:

I seems that they haven't fixed this problem in Karmic yet.
I've uploaded the karmic package with the patch into my testing ppa, along with the one for jaunty.

Widget layer closes on any window action, whether it is inside the widget layer or not.

This includes notifications disappearing and closing/minimizing windows (regardless of them being in the widget layer or not).
