Bug Description

I have a terminal screenlet setup in my compiz widget layer, and this is where I do most of my console work. The problem is that any kind of notification from notify-osd causes the widget layer to close. It's very annoying, is there any way to remedy this?

Thank you for reporting this behaviour, it helps make Ubuntu better. I just want to be clear on the issue; are you using Kubuntu or are you using AWM under Gnome? Also, what version of Ubuntu are you currently using? And are you using 32 or 64bit?

This will help. While I'm waiting for an answer, I will mark this incomplete.

What I can reproduce here is the widget-layer exiting when a notify-osd-rendered notification closes. The cause of this is unknown to me right now. Under what circumstances exactely does it exit the widget-layer for you? You did not precisely describe that.

Any and all notifications cause the widget layer to close. First the notification pops up, and the widget layer closes as the notification disapears. I'm not sure how much clearer to explain it.

Your last comment verified my described observation. This is certainly more precise than your initial comment on the bug-entry.

I have a similar problem. When I change the volume using multimedia keys, I am unable to click on the play/pause and fast forward on Movie Player until the the notification goes away. Could this be the same issue?

I reported in bug 356374 that the same behavior is observed when tooltips close. That bug is actually talking about certain clicks on applications causing the widget layer to close. It might be different but the symptoms are strikingly similar.

This is all a shame because it makes the widget layer useless and it was a great feature.

I am also having this problem with Ubuntu Jaunty after upgrade from Intrepid. If I receive a notification or launch an application, the widget layer disappears, which is very annoying. For me, this is very important, as my workflow depends on being able to use the widget layer.

I can confirm what Paul Hirst said above, it seems to happen when tool tips or drop down menus. It happens with these types of windows: Menu, PopupMenu, DropdownMenu, Dialog, ModalDialog, Tooltip, Notification, Utility.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. However, I am closing it because the bug has been fixed in the latest development version of Ubuntu - Maverick Meerkat. It won't be fixed in previous versions of Ubuntu because the package doesn't fit the requirements for backporting. See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuBackports for more information.
