Bug Description

Pattern Along Path has strange behavior. I made this operation on a lot of paths with the same pattern but on the next path operation didn't perform correctly. It made path along pattern. Selection order was correct. The bug gone only when I cut the pattern and insert it back from clipboard.

OS Windows XP SP3

Inkscape 0.46

LPEs have been improved a lot in the development version.
Could you please try a nightly build (get it at inkscape.org, downloads section) and confirm if the bug still persists or it has been fixed?

From the description it seems that Nikita is using the extension 'Pattern Along Path…', not the LPE.
The extension depends on the stack order of the selected elements, the extension dialog states:

'This effect bends a pattern object along arbitrary "skeleton" paths. The pattern is the top most object in the selection. (groups of paths/shapes/clones... allowed)'.

That's why the 'bug gone only when I cut the pattern and insert it back from clipboard' -> the copy&paste changed the stack order of the elements.

@Nikita - which version of Inkscape and which command 'Pattern Along Path…' did you use?

1) Standard command means which, a) or b)?
  a) 'Effects > Generate from Path… > Pattern Along Path…'
  b) 'Path > Path Effects…'
2) If you used a), does my explanation make sense to you? The command fails if the pattern object is not above the skeleton path. To change the stack order use 'Object > Raise' or the corresponding icons of the select tool controls bar to move the 'pattern' object to the top. The order of selection has no influence when using the effect 'Pattern Along Path'.

Hello.
The command from 'Effects > Generate from Path… > Pattern Along Path…'
Unfortunately I have not Windows XP and Inkskape now. Only Vista and
Ubuntu and very limited Internet. So I cant check now your solution.
Thanks for it. I will try it later.

SVN revision 17200 changed the behavior of this extension from 'depend on selection order' to 'depend on z-order'. Many users who don't read the explanatory text of the extension dialog in detail don't realize the change and perceive the new working mode as bug.
