I can confirm the CUPS error_log problem on a Dell Inspiron 700m, although the log file hasn't grown nearly as large as the previous report, perhaps because this computer is regularly suspended or turned off.

The log file gets an entry every five seconds, exactly as described above. The affected system currently has no printers installed, but it will when it returns "home," so disabling CUPS isn't a viable option.

The other real problem with this CUPS problem is that it completely breaks laptop_mode, since the hard drive can never spin down, and at default laptop_mode settings the hard drive motor will do a partial spin down and spin up every five seconds, probably leading to a quick HDD death.

This seems to happen to me too, but, it stops sometimes (it doesn't seem to happen all of the time).

Do you guys have no printers like me? Does this error stop if you add a printer? I don't have any printers installed, but the log file stopped filling up for me a few hours ago...

Is there a way to patch CUPS to just not log these errors if no printer is installed?

The very same effect concerns gnome-cups-icon, it writes

  ** (gnome-cups-icon:1455): WARNING **: IPP request failed with status 1030

into ~/.xsession-errors every three seconds and fills the log

   * Add debian/patches/51_ipp_log_severity_info.dpatch: Drop successful IPP
     messages to log level 'debug' and unsuccessful ones to 'info'. This is a
     more generic approach to avoid ridiculously huge logs due to polling by
     gnome-cups-icon and friends.
   * Drop debian/patches/51_dont_log_ipp_printer_query.dpatch, obsoleted by
     above patch.
   * Add debian/patches/52_default_log_level_warning.dpatch: Raise default log
     level from info to warning. Closes: LP#38042

This should fix the cups logs finally.
